1) PIERCE COUNTY WINS NATIONAL MEDAL

Congratulations go to the Pierce County Library System, a recipient of the National Medal for Museum and Library Service, awarded at a White House ceremony on May 8, 2013! The award honors outstanding institutions that make significant and exceptional contributions to their communities. Selected institutions demonstrate extraordinary and innovative approaches to public service, exceeding the expected levels of community outreach.

A picture of First Lady Michelle Obama presenting the award to Pierce County Library Director Neel Parikh may be seen at the WSL Facebook page, www.facebook.com/WashingtonStateLibrary, and more information about the award and recipients is available on the IMLS (Institute of Museum and Library Services) website at www.imls.gov/about/medals.aspx. To view the video of the First Lady’s speech and award presentations, follow this shortcut link: 1.usa.gov/17MJczo. Again, our enthusiastic congratulations to Pierce County Library System, and its staff and patrons.

2) FILL THE BASKET AND SUPPORT WTBBL

Help the good work of the Washington Talking Book & Braille Library (WTBBL) by participating in a free online fundraiser this month, the You Pick for Charity Game, sponsored by the Inland Northwest Community Foundation (INWCF). It’s simple to do. Go to www.inwcf.org/give/you-pick-for-charity-game. Then simply move all the apples on the tree into WTBBL’s basket. At the end of May, the charity with the most apples wins.

Factoid: Did you know that WTBBL is not just for readers who are blind or visually impaired? Those eligible for this service are children and adults who are residents of the state of Washington and who are:

  • Legally blind;
  • Deaf-blind;
  • Visually impaired (inability to read standard printed materials without special aids or devices other than regular glasses);
  • Learning disabled (reading disability, resulting from organic dysfunction, of sufficient severity to prevent reading of printed material in a normal manner); or
  • Physically disabled (inability to turn pages or comfortably hold a book for extended periods of time as a result of physical limitations). Conditions such as severe arthritis affecting the hands, diseases affecting fine and gross motor skills such as MS and Parkinson’s, and other injuries and illnesses can make using standard print materials difficult, if not impossible.

All equipment and services, including the mailing of materials, are free to eligible users. The Federal Government’s Library of Congress supplies materials and equipment. Basic operating costs are provided by the state of Washington. To find out more about WTBBL, visit www.wtbbl.org.

3) GOT GENEALOGISTS? GET TIPS AT JUNE’S FIRST TUESDAYS

Genealogy continues to be a hot topic in libraries. And as more and more materials become available online, including digitized images of primary sources, the amount of information can be overwhelming, even for the most dedicated family historian. But help is here – mark your calendar now for Getting the Most Out of Online Genealogy Sources, the next First Tuesdays program, where WSL’s Kim Smeenk will lead a tour of web sites that will help you guide your patrons to valuable sources for family history such as vital records and historic newspapers. She will share some tips that will help your patrons get the most out of searching two of the top genealogy web sites, Ancestry.com and FamilySearch.org.

This free online webinar will take place on June 4, 2013, from 9:00 – 10:00 a.m. PDT. For more information about First Tuesdays, visit www.sos.wa.gov/quicklinks/tuesdays. For instructions on joining the presentation, visit www.sos.wa.gov/quicklinks/FirstTuesdays.

4) HELP WASHINGTON’S CHILDREN TO REACH OUT AND READ

Reach Out and Read supports parents as their child’s first teacher through an evidence-based early literacy program in which doctors give young children new books and help parents understand how to support language development at home. On Wednesday, May 15, you can help this valuable program by participating in the Seattle Foundation’s annual GiveBIG one-day charitable giving event. The more donations made to Reach Out and Read on GiveBIG day, the more dollars in matching funds they will receive. For additional information, visit www.sos.wa.gov/quicklinks/RORGiveBIG.

5) CCC SCHOLARSHIPS FOR ACADEMIC LIBRARIANS

The Conference Scholarship Program for Academic Librarians, sponsored by the Copyright Clearance Center (CCC), helps academic librarians attend industry events and further their professional goals. The CCC is currently accepting applications for scholarships for the 2013 ALA Annual Conference in Chicago. Each of the four successful applicants will receive $1,500 that can be used towards the cost of conference registration, travel, and other conference-related expenses. Visit www.sos.wa.gov/quicklinks/CCCALA for more information. The application deadline is Monday, May 20, 2013.
