1) WSL REDUCES SERVICE HOURS

In-person service hours at the main Washington State Library (WSL) in Tumwater will be reduced by four hours a day, effective June 16, as the service-and-research institution grapples with continuing significant budget challenges. The Library, located at 6880 Capitol Boulevard in Tumwater, traditionally has been open to the public Monday through Friday, 8:00 – 5:00 p.m. But, like a number of other states facing budget difficulties, the State Library faces an immediate shortfall that must be addressed through layoffs and fewer direct service hours.

The dedicated fund that finances Library operations now projects a potential shortfall of more than $1 million due primarily to an unexpected slump in the number of recording fees collected by county auditors. This is on top of a $664,000 budget cut that was required at the beginning of the biennium, following a decade of budget and staff reductions.

Beginning June 16, the central Library will be open Monday through Friday, noon – 5:00 p.m. for walk-in patrons. Chat and e-mail help will still be available from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday – Friday. Service at the Washington Talking Book & Braille Library will remain the same.

2) LIBRARY 2.014 CONFERENCE PROPOSALS SOLICITED

Library 2.014 Worldwide Virtual Conference, the fourth annual global conversation about the future of libraries, is scheduled for October 8 – 9, 2014. The conference will once again be held entirely online around the clock in multiple languages and time zones. Everyone is invited to participate in this free forum designed to foster collaboration and knowledge sharing among information professionals worldwide.

This year’s conference will address a wide variety of timely topics such as MOOCs, eBooks, and maker spaces. Presentations will cover the following six subject strands:

• Digital Services, Preservation, and Access;
• Emerging Technologies and Trends;
• Learning Commons and Infinite Learning;
• Management of Libraries and Information Centers in the 21st Century;
• User Centered Services and Models;
• Library and Information Professionals – Evolving Roles and Opportunities.

3) CHILDREN’S BOOKS FOR COMMUNITIES IN NEED

Are you affiliated with an organization in a low-income or underserved area that needs a small library, needs to rebuild or add to a library, or serves children who would benefit by being given new books to take home? Or do you know of such an organization?

The Lisa Libraries donates new children’s books and small libraries to organizations that work with kids in poor and underserved areas. Started by author Ann M. Martin and friends to honor and memorialize children’s book editor Lisa Novak, the Lisa Libraries supplements under-filled shelves and also provides books to many children who may never have owned a book before. Some of the libraries have been established at day-care centers, prison visiting areas for children of incarcerated parents, homeless shelters, battered women’s shelters, and after-school programs. Since its founding in 1990, the Lisa Libraries has contributed over 350,000 books to nonprofit organizations across the country.

In general, the Lisa Libraries has a strong interest in supporting small, grass-roots organizations. As a matter of policy, the Foundation makes grants only to organizations that do not discriminate against people seeking services or employment based on race, sex, religion, age, sexual preference, or physical ability. 4) SUPPORTING LGBT YOUTH

LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender) youth are at increased risk of suicide attempts, alcohol use, homelessness, and more, but many of them have happy and safe teen years. Parental and school support can play a huge role. The Health Library of the Office of Adolescent Health (OAH), a unit of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, provides guidance for parents/foster parents of LGBT youth, and information on the health of LGBT teens.
