3) PUBLIC LIBRARY POLICIES PAGE HAS MOVED

The Washington State Library’s Public Library Policies page has moved. Formerly available on the WebJunction site, Public Library Policies page has permanently moved to: http://www.sos.wa.gov/library/libraries/libDev/policies.aspx

4) BRAILLE TRANSCRIPTION CLASS

The Washington Talking Book and Braille Library (WTBBL) will launch a new Braille transcription class in September 2014. If you are a perfectionist and love to read, and want to help others read, you could learn to transcribe books into braille!

WTBBL offers a free course in braille transcription in 28 lessons, on Wednesday evenings from September 2014 to May 2015. This is an eight-month class with weekly homework (PC-based software provided). Classes meet at WTBBL, 2021 9th Avenue (at Lenora) in Seattle. Free parking is available during class. The first session on September 17 begins at 6:00 p.m. All remaining classes are held from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.

5) INTERNATIONAL COPYRIGHT AND LIBRARY PRACTICES WEBINAR

Please join us for International Copyright and Library Practices, a free webinar provided by the Copyright Advisory Committee for the ALA Office for Information Technology Policy (OITP), on Thursday, August 7, 2014 at 11 a.m. – 12 p.m. PDT. This presentation covers the basics of international copyright and how it applies to use of foreign works by libraries and in educational settings in the United States.

Janice T. Pilch, Copyright and Licensing Librarian and Rutgers University Libraries faculty member, will present the webinar. She is a former chair of the ALA OITP Copyright Education Subcommittee. From 2007-2011 she served as an International Copyright Advocate for the Library Copyright Alliance at the World Intellectual Property Organization and other international organizations to promote fair and equitable access to information. Janice served as Visiting Program Officer on International Copyright for ARL in 2009-2010. She is currently the U.S. representative to the IFLA Committee on Copyright and Other Legal Matters and chairs a permanent committee on copyright issues within the Association of Slavic, East European and Eurasian Studies.

6) FREE DISASTER RECOVERY WORKSHOP

Protecting Cultural Collections: Disaster Prevention, Preparedness, Response & Recovery is a free two-part workshop sponsored by the Western States & Territories Preservation Assistance Service (WESTPAS). Funding is provided by the National Endowment for the Humanities. The instructor, Gary Menges, is a retired Preservation Administrator, UW Libraries, a WESTPAS trainer, and a member of the American Institute for Conservation of Historic and Artistic Works Collections Emergency Response Team (AIC CERT).

Who should attend? Administrators and staff responsible for emergency preparedness, response and decision-making, in all types of cultural institutions. By registering for the workshop, the institution commits to supporting the attendee(s) to achieve the workshop’s disaster preparedness goals. When possible, please commit two attendees so they can work together on the disaster preparedness activities.
