1) WSL SDL PROQUEST RENEWAL

The Washington State Library Statewide Database Licensing (SDL) project announces the 2015-2016 ProQuest package renewal.

As usual, the renewal is automatic, unless a library submits a cancellation form by May 27, 2015.

• K-12 school libraries should contact their local ESD (Educational Service District). For more information, visit the SDL ProQuest Subscription Renewal page at wa.gov/q/Renewal.

2) SDL NEEDS ASSESSMENT RESULTS RELEASED

The WSL Statewide Database Licensing (SDL) project announces the release of the results of the recent needs assessment. The consulting firm’s executive summary and recommendations, as well as the full 28-page report are available for download and reading at sos.wa.gov/q/SDL_Needs.

Fully 85% of library staff respondents showed their preference for having the SDL project continue doing what it has been, but at the same time, a majority also indicated their desire for more choices and flexibility in the resources offered by the project, although the percentage of those making that their top choice has declined since 2010 when a similar survey was conducted.

Making sense of the results, and making recommendations based on them is the current task of the SDL Advisory Committee (sos.wa.gov/q/SDLadvise) and project manager, Will Stuivenga ([email protected]). Comments and suggestions are solicited and encouraged.

3) NOW HEAR THIS: LESSONS IN MUSIC ADVISORY WEBINAR

Now Hear This: Lessons in music advisory, a webinar presented by Katie Irons, Pierce County Library, and John Fossett, Kitsap Regional Library, May 5, 2015, 9:00 – 10:00 a.m. PDT.

Do you find yourself at a loss for suggestions when a patron asks for some C&W music recommendations? Can’t tell Be-Bop from Big Band or Rap from Hip Hop? Whether you’re trying to improve you music advisory skills or simply want to expand your own listening experience, we have a class for you. We’ll discuss the major genres in popular music, sharing a few titles and artists from each and you will leave with a “tool kit” sure to inform and delight.

4) WASHINGTON RURAL HERITAGE GRANT CYCLE OPEN

Would your library like to digitize its historical materials and special collections? Create an online community archive of unique materials from your patrons’ family collections? Partner with local historical societies and other organizations to collaboratively digitize local history resources?

Washington Rural Heritage (WRH), the Washington State Library’s statewide digitization initiative for public and tribal libraries, is currently accepting grant applications for 2015 – 2016 digitization projects. A total of $25,000 in LSTA funds is available to award five (5) or more grants up to $5,000 each. To date, more than 100 cultural institutions throughout Washington, including 39 libraries, have contributed to this growing collection of digitized primary sources.

This year’s grant cycle is open to all public and tribal libraries currently lacking a functioning digital repository. This grant cycle does not exclude current WRH partners. Libraries from communities of any size may apply, at the system or individual branch level. Collections digitized with this grant will be publicly accessible through Washington Rural Heritage at www.washingtonruralheritage.org.

5) CONFERENCES AHEAD

Pacific Northwest Library Association 2015 Conference, August 5-7, 2015 at Vancouver, Washington.

Registration is open now; early registration rates end on July 3, 2015.

Association for Rural and Small Libraries Annual Conference 2015 early registration has opened. ARSL 2015 will be held in Little Rock, Arkansas from October 1-3, with pre-conferences and tours taking place Sept. 30. The conference hotel is the Riverwalk Marriott.
