1) DECEMBER FIRST TUESDAYS WEBINAR

Preserving the Future: Special Collections as Part of 21st Century Library Planning presented by Sean Lanksbury, Washington State Library, on December 1, 2015 from 9:00 – 10:00 a.m. PST

The definition of what special collections are has broadened over the last few decades from rare book collections to include photographic, manuscript, audiovisual, and multimedia materials.

How do special collections fit into a forward-thinking library plan? Bibliophiles may see the need for special collection materials as self-evident, but how can the library/archival community make their case to all the stakeholders involved in library planning?

We’ll discuss the practices of special collections and the traditions of the antiquarian trade and how they align with both the requirements of digital access and the future of the book as a whole. We will also explore how modern technologies and practices are affecting the special collections world, for better or worse, and how librarians and staff caring for these collections can meet the demands while preserving these unique items.

2) LETTERS ABOUT LITERATURE CONTEST

The annual Letters About Literature contest has begun! Please encourage teachers and students in grades 4 – 12 at your school or in your library service area to participate. Homeschoolers are welcome as well.

• Level 3 (grades 9-12) entries must be postmarked by December 4, 2015.
• Level 1 (grades 4-6) and Level 2 (grades 7-8) entries must be postmarked by January 11, 2016.

The 23rd annual writing contest for young readers is made possible by a generous grant from the Dollar General Literacy Foundation, with additional support from gifts to the Center for the Book in the Library of Congress, which promotes the contest through its affiliate Centers for the Book, State Libraries and other organizations. This is the 11th year that Washington State Library, a division of the Office of the Secretary of State, has sponsored Letters About Literature as part of Washington Reads.

3) STAR LIBRARY EDUCATION NETWORK

The STAR Library Education Network (STAR_Net) is supported by a grant from the National Science Foundation and other funders. STAR stands for Science-Technology Activities and Resources.

This ground-breaking initiative includes:

• traveling STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) exhibits
• development of STEM activities for public libraries
• comprehensive training program that includes in-person workshops and webinars
• development of the STAR_Net Online Community
• research and evaluation

STAR_Net is led by the Space Science Institute’s National Center for Interactive Learning. Partners include the American Library Association, Lunar and Planetary Institute, and the Afterschool Alliance along with many other organizations. Join the STAR NET weekly list, it’s THE resource for STEM in public libraries.
