1) FIRST TUESDAYS – EMERGENCY LIBRARY SERVICES

The December 1st First Tuesdays webinar, a continuing education opportunity from the State Library, will feature Gail Kouame from the National Network of Libraries of Medicine. Gail will talk about how libraries can continue to provide services after an emergency incident or disruptive event such as widespread flu.

2) GALE PUBLIC LIBRARY GROUP PURCHASE RENEWAL

In partnership with Washington Public Libraries Cooperate! (WPLC!), the Washington State Library’s Statewide Database Licensing (SDL) project and Gale Cengage Learning are pleased to offer the 2010 Gale database options. This offer is for all public libraries (whether currently participating or not) and provides an unlimited number of users for January 1, 2010 through December 31, 2010.

There will be no price increase for 2010. All renewals will be held at the same price as last year. Please visit the SDL Gale public library group purchase web page at www.secstate.wa.gov/quicklinks/Gale for additional details and the forms. Please return the two-page “Intent to Participate” form to Gale (not to the state library) by no later than December 4, 2009.

3) APPLY FOR THE BIG READ

The Big Read is a program to revitalize the role of literature in American culture. Organizations may apply for grants ranging from $2,500 to $20,000 with the grant size determined by community population, number of activities planned, and artistic excellence and merit. Selected communities will participate in The Big Read from September 2010 – June 2011.

Big Read grants require the participation of a library as a lead applicant or a partner. Grant funds must be matched with nonfederal funds. Match may be used for such expenses as book purchases, speaker fees and travel, salaries, advertising, and venue rental.

The proposal deadline is February 2, 2010. The application may be downloaded at neabigread.org/guidelines.php. Questions should be directed to Arts Midwest at 612-238-8010 or [email protected].
