1) APPLY FOR A POSITION ON THE LIBRARY COUNCIL OF WASHINGTON

The Library Council of Washington (LCW) advises the State Librarian and the Office of the Secretary of State on statewide library issues and the expenditure of federal LSTA funding. Applications are currently being accepted for two positions on the Council – one representing Special Libraries, the other representing Public Libraries serving fewer than 100,000 persons. Applications must be postmarked by Friday, April 6, 2012 to be considered. The term for both of these positions is anticipated to begin in September 2012.

2) MONTH OF THE MILITARY CHILD

In partnership with Robbin Seeberger, State Youth Coordinator for the Washington National Guard Family Programs, the Washington State Library offers the following resources to honor and thank military families in communities throughout the state during April, the Month of the Military Child:

  • “Resources for Military Children Affected by Deployment” – Compiled by the U.S. Army Family and Morale, Welfare, and Recreation Command: Child and Youth Services; provides a list of suggested books for children; deployment kits for both children and adults; and web sites for children, parents, and teachers at www.sos.wa.gov/quicklinks/deploy;
  • “Libraries support military families” – A series of posters that can be used as flyers, displays, and welcome signs, available at www.sos.wa.gov/quicklinks/milflyers;
  • “Military KidsConnect” – Age-targeted information for children, elementary grades through high school, at www.militarykidsconnect.org. Select “Parents & Caregivers” on the bulletin board graphic for a number of useful resources including the “Parent Resource Guide”;
  • “Military Families Learning Network” – Cooperative Extension family specialists and military family service professionals from the Department of Defense, branch services, and non-governmental organizations, offer professional development opportunities for military family service professionals.   • “Coming Together Around Military Families® (CTAMF)” – A variety of resources from the Zero to Three National Center for Infants, Toddlers, and Families, including CTAMF Training Opportunities for Professionals Serving Military Families, the “Duty to Care” e-learning course, and the CTAMF e-newsletter, available via this shortcut link: www.sos.wa.gov/quicklinks/0to3military;
  • “Military Connections” – Pierce County Library’s new web page, designed especially for military families, at military.mypcls.org.

3) PROMOTE PRESERVATION WEEK

To increase awareness of the importance of preservation for both personal and library collections, ALA is encouraging libraries and other institutions to celebrate Preservation Week, April 22 – 28. It’s easy to participate:

  • Create a display about preserving and collecting personal, family, or community heritage;
  • Offer a preservation workshop or event;
  • Highlight Preservation Week on your web site with a link to ALA’s Preservation Week resources designed for library users at www.atyourlibrary.org/passiton;
  • Tweet about Preservation Week (hashtag: #preswk);
  • Get 2012 Preservation Week event updates on Facebook at www.facebook.com/preservationweek.

4) GET READY FOR DÍA 2012

On April 30, 2012, libraries all over the country will be celebrating El día de los niños/El día de los libros (Children’s Day/Book Day). To help your library celebrate, the Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC), a division of ALA, invites you to explore the new Día website, providing links to:

  • A Resource Guide, intended to help librarians interested in creating Día programs and celebrations in their public or school libraries;
  • An interactive map that enables searching for Día events by state or by zip code;
  • The Día! Book List, which includes suggestions for children’s books available in several languages, as well as tips to share with parents and caregivers to help their children learn to read;
  • Register your Día activity; those registering will receive complimentary stickers and buttons, while supplies last, to promote their library’s events.

5) HELP FOR ONE MILLION AMERICANS

What do Booth Gardner, Billy Graham, Janet Reno, Muhammed Ali, and Michael J. Fox have in common? They, along with an estimated one million people in the United States, have Parkinson’s disease, a progressive neurological disorder for which there is currently no cure. Every year, to commemorate the birthday of James Parkinson, the 19th century English physician who first identified the disease, April is designated as Parkinson’s Awareness Month.

The Parkinson’s Disease Foundation (PDF) offers the following suggestions to increase awareness about the disease and make available resources to those affected by it:

  • Create a Parkinson’s Awareness Month display in your library using free educational materials available from the PDF by visiting www.pdf.org/parkinson_awareness_tools;
  • Spread the word about the PDF’s print or online searchable database of national Parkinson’s resources at www.pdf.org/en/resourcelink;
  • Host a Parkinson’s-themed book fair, or dedicate sections of your newsletter, website, and/or bulletin board to Parkinson’s Awareness Month;
  • Distribute free copies of PDF’s Parkinson’s Awareness Month action calendars for April 2012;
  • Display PDF’s Parkinson’s Awareness Month Poster in your library;
  • Sign up to host a Parkinson’s quilt display from the Parkinson’s Quilt Project.
