2)  ADULT SUMMER READING PROGRAM MANUAL

Master the Art of Reading, the 2009 Adult Summer Reading Program manual is now available online at www.cslpreads.org/members/. It is for Washington libraries’ use only; contact Martha Shinners [email protected] for the login/password to access the site.

The 2009 adult summer reading program is a pilot – a printed copy of the 2010 adult program manual will be included with the youth and teen manuals in the early fall 2009 mailing. Send Martha any comments or suggestions regarding the continuation of an adult program, as well as specific comments on the 2009 adult manual/incentives, for inclusion at the annual CSLP meeting April 22, 2009.

4)  HEALTH REFERENCE BASICS WEBINAR

The College of DuPage will present An Ounce of Prevention: Health Reference Basics, a Soaring to Excellence teleconference, on Thursday, April 16 from 9:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m., PDT. This will be available as a free webinar from your own computer by registering here, www.bcr.org/training/partners/teleconferences or for viewing the webinar in person at the Washington State Library, Room 221, register at www.secstate.wa.gov/quicklinks/healthwebinar . Notice that the program is on a Thursday, not the usual Friday. Note for those who will be busy attending WLA–those who have registered for the webinar can access the program online for 30 days, and WSL will later have the program on DVD for borrowing.

Program description: Rising health care costs, economic instability, and the proactive nature of today’s society are contributing to more and more individuals seeking out health information online and in print. Are you and your library ready to meet the diverse needs of these health information seekers? Are you effectively marketing your health-related services and resources? This program will emphasize quality print and electronic resources as well as the roles and responsibilities of patients, library information professionals and health care professionals in the information seeking process. Join us in exploring various aspects of the health reference experience including the need to respect patient privacy, how to accommodate the cultural diversity of our clientele, matching the right types of resources to specific clients, and ways to successfully navigate tricky health reference situations. We’ll also look at ways to promote the health resources and services that you have to offer.

6)  FINANCIAL WORKSHOPS AVAILABLE

The Washington State Department of Financial Institutions is offering a series of free public events. The workshops, Taking Charge In Tough Times, are open to the public; pre-registration is required.

Program description: With skyrocketing costs on everything from food to utilities, families losing their homes, retirement accounts shrinking and millions of Americans without a job, it’s no wonder that Washingtonians are feeling swamped by the wake of the economic downturn. To make matters worse, crooks and swindlers have emerged with a new crop of scams and schemes designed to take advantage of today’s turbulent economy. Where can you turn for the resources you need and sound advice on how to protect you and your money? DFI has joined forces with some of the state’s leading consumer advocates and experts to help you weather the financial storm.

Presenters are from AARP, the Attorney General’s Office, Microsoft, the FINRA Investor Education Foundation, the Federal Trade Commission, the Department of Financial Institutions, KCTS 9 and the Washington State Crime Prevention Association.

7)  GENTLY-USED COPIES OF THREE CUPS OF TEA WILL BE AVAILABLE AT WLA

If your library could use gently used copies of Three Cups of Tea, you can pick them up at the Washington State Library booth at the WLA conference in Spokane. Pierce County Library recently finished a community wide read that featured Three Cups of Tea and has close to 900 books to share with libraries in Washington State.

If you can’t make it to Spokane, but would still like copies of the book, or book discussion kits (including 8 to 14 copies of this title) for use in your library, please contact Leanna Hammond at [email protected] or 360.704.7133. They will be sent to you free of charge.
