Library News
District Technology Manager Josh Westbrook will deliver a special report to the Walla Walla County Rural Library District board meeting on the district’s 2009-2012 technology plan. The plan has been approved by the Washington State Library and will allow the District to receive reduced telecommunications costs at the Burbank Library. (Walla Walla Union Bulletin, 6.14.09)
The dedication of the Ephrata Library, a part of the North Central Regional Library System, as the W. Gayle Matthews Library Building will take place Wednesday June 17, 2009 at the Library Building. Matthews, operator of the Grant County Title and Abstract Office, was an Ephrata and Grant County pioneer who was instrumental in the 1909 formation of Grant County out of Douglas County and the incorporation of Ephrata as a city the same year. Children’s entertainer, Nancy Stewart, plans a tour of four Whitman County Library branches as part of Summer Reading 2009. A well regarded musician who has been writing and performing for young children and their families for 20 years, she features original and traditional songs. Edmonds City Council member Peggy Pritchard Olson was recognized on June 4 at the annual Sno-Isle Libraries Friends Celebration for her years of service to the Edmonds Library. The Sno-Isle Libraries also recognized the Friends of the Snohomish Library for 50 years of service and the Friends of the Lynnwood Library for 30 years of service to their community libraries. Summer Reading
The White Salmon Valley Community Library, a part of the Fort Vancouver Regional Library District, has started their Summer Reading program and it runs through the end of August. Some of the programs offered include: A Family Movie Matinee, Puppet Theater, T-shirt Silk screening, a Juggling Show, Mexican Legends, A Creature Feature and an Outdoor Concert. The Roslyn Public Library has started their Summer Reading Program. Hard Times/Economy
The Quincy City Council is making another attempt at trying to gather money for a new library. The city applied for a Community Development Block Grant in November to help pay for about $850,000 of the cost but the state rejected the grant. They are now looking to apply for federal stimulus money to help them get the new library built. (Columbia Basin Herald [Moses Lake], 6.9.09)
The Whatcom County Library System board of trustees will decide Tuesday, June 16, whether to ask voters for more property tax dollars for the Whatcom County Library System. A great deal of effort has been put into the request that trustees will consider next week, this includes a citizen’s advisory committee, focus group meetings and surveying library users.
