2) ALA’S BOOKS FOR BABIES GRANTS

Books for Babies, an initiative of the American Library Association, is a national literacy program that acquaints parents of newborns with the important role they play in the development of their children. Books for Babies matching grants of $500 are available to Friends of Libraries groups, women’s groups, libraries, and other nonprofit organizations to be used for the purchase of Books for Babies kits.

Grants will be awarded to organizations that currently have a Books for Babies program in place as well as organizations starting a new program. Priority will be given to organizations that effectively use the kits to connect new parents with their local library. Applying organizations must raise matching funds of $1,000. The next application deadline is October 1, 2009. Use this shortcut link www.secstate.wa.gov/quicklinks/BooksForBabies for more information about the program.

5) IMLS RELEASES LSTA REPORT

The character of library services has changed dramatically with the advent of new information technologies, the continuous development of locally-tailored services, and the expectations of the 21st century library user, according to the first analysis of the Grants to States program by the Institute of Museum and Library Service (IMLS). The report, “Catalyst for Change: LSTA Grants to State Program and the Transformation of Libraries Services to the Public,” focuses on services provided through the Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) grants to State Library Agencies. IMLS conducted the study to inform the American public, the Administration, Congress and the library community about the program’s contributions.

“The program’s flexibility is its greatest strength because it allows each state to tailor program services to the specific needs of its citizens … But a common thread that connects these programs is a dedication to providing state-of-the-art programming and information services that meet a clear and compelling local need,” said an IMLS spokesperson.
