1) EASY WAY TO FIND STATE LIBRARY, SECRETARY OF STATE BLOGS

Many of you in our state’s library community like to check out the Washington State Library’s blog to find out the latest news on WSL programs, activities and news. 2) NANCY PEARL READER’S ADVISORY WORKSHOPS

Opening Doors, Opening Books: Providing Effective Reader’s Advisory Service is the title of this free workshop which will be presented by Nancy Pearl. In order to effectively match up a reader with just the right book, it’s helpful to understand how to apply the concept of “doorways” in suggesting reading material. This session will focus on defining, identifying, and using doorways in RA situations.

In the afternoon, discover booktalking! Learn how to booktalk with your library users, whether it’s a presentation for a community group or talking one on one to an individual in the library stacks. In this workshop we’ll discuss the elements of good booktalks; how to structure a booktalk; and what’s important to include (and not include). Schedule:

3) CE GRANT UPDATE – LESS MATCH REQUIRED

Would you like to attend the upcoming National Streams Tribal Conference or ABOS (Association of Bookmobile and Outreach Services) in October or another qualifying continuing education event? To help libraries during these hard economic times, the Washington State Library is temporarily lowering the required match for CE grants to 25%. The Washington State Library will cover the remaining 75% of eligible expenses.

Members of the Washington library community who need financial assistance to attend or receive instruction (individuals) or provide a workshop (organizations) may be eligible for grants. A portion of the State Library’s federal Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) funds have been allocated specifically for supporting Continuing Education.

4) WASHINGTON READS GOES PDF

In an effort to reduce printing costs the current Washington Reads posters, bookmark and bibliography have been made available as Adobe PDF files for your use. If you do not already have the Adobe Acrobat Reader software you can download it for free at: get.adobe.com/reader/.

The poster will be available in three sizes: letter, legal, and tabloid. The bibliography will only be offered in letter size and bookmarks will be offered one way as well: four bookmarks to a sheet, letter size. They are available at www.secstate.wa.gov/library/wa_reads/.

5) STATEWIDE DB TRIALS FINISH FOR MAY – JUNE

Statewide Database Trials for May – June, covering “Hard Times” resources, are now over. If you tried out any of the trial products and are interested in getting further information, or pricing, please fill out the interest form located here: www.secstate.wa.gov/quicklinks/DBTrials2009InterestForm.

6) LIBRARY EXEMPTION FROM DIGITAL PRODUCTS TAX

In the recently completed session, the Washington legislature passed, and the governor has signed a bill, ESHB 2075, which imposes a tax on digital products and services. The bill takes effect on July 26. Fortunately, due to the work of the WLA Legislative Planning Committee (Mike Wirt, co-chair) and Legislative Liaison Steve Duncan, libraries have been exempted from the tax.

The Washington Department of Revenue (DOR) has confirmed that libraries are eligible for the exemption, which applies to digital products and services which are purchased to be given away for free. The purchaser must provide the seller with an exemption certificate, which will be available from the DOR web site. Previously, the DOR had ruled that libraries were exempt from paying sales tax on subscription database purchases, but this new bill appears to apply more broadly to all types of digital products and services. 7) UPDATED PRESERVATION GRANTS RESOURCE

The Library of Congress and the Foundation Center have just updated Foundation Grants for Preservation in Libraries, Archives and Museums. The 2009 2nd ed. is now available online free at www.loc.gov/preserv/foundtn-grants.pdf.

"Presented in PDF format for easy scanning or downloading, grants are arranged alphabetically by state, then by names of foundations and recipients. Includes hyperlinks from foundations listed in the volume to additional information featured in Foundation Finder, a free foundation look-up tool on the center’s website. Additional links lead users to free tutorials about proposal grant-writing and introduction to foundations." (Library of Congress Gazette v.20:3 June 26, 2009 p.4-5.)
