1) FREE NANCY PEARL READERS’ ADVISORY WORKSHOPS
In order to effectively match up a reader with just the right book, it’s helpful to understand how to apply the concept of “doorways” in suggesting reading material. This session will focus on defining, identifying, and using doorways in readers’ advisory situations. Nancy will also discuss how mood and motivation affects whether or not a reader will enjoy a particular book. Finally, Nancy will be offering tips on how to grow your knowledge of books and how to conquer “desk paralysis.”
In the afternoon, discover booktalking. Everywhere we go we have the opportunity to share our love for good books to read. Learn how to booktalk with your library users, whether it’s a presentation for a community group, talking one on one to an individual in the library stacks, or chatting in the grocery line. In this workshop Nancy will discuss the elements of good booktalks; how to structure a booktalk; and what’s important to include (and not include).

2) WLA SAM SUPERVISORY WORKSHOP CANCELLED
Carolyn Petersen, WLA SAM interest group chair, thanks everyone who signed up for the three workshops on “Managing Others During Tight Times.” Unfortunately, the workshops did not get enough folks in any of the three locations to break even. Therefore all three workshops are canceled.
Those of you who did register and who sent checks will receive them back and any credit card payments will be refunded.
For more information about SAM (Supervisors and Managers Interest Group of WLA), please contact Carolyn Petersen, [email protected].

By now most librarians are familiar with a host of 2.0 tools, but many are still wondering how best to take advantage of them. This presentation will demonstrate a few ways that librarians can harness the power of RSS to broadcast quality information into the places that matter most to our patrons: library Web sites, patron iPods or other community-centered sites. Tools explored will include RSS-enabled sources such as blogs, podcasts and Web 2.0 favorites like del.icio.us, twitter and RSS, to Javascript converters such as Feed2JS or Widgetbox.
More Than Just Googling
9/2/09 — 1:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. — Pierce County Library Processing and Administrative Center, Tacoma
Of course you know about – and probably use – Google’s search engine, but are you familiar with the collection of other great tools that Google offers? We briefly explore a few of these tools and how they may help you work a little more efficiently, and even perhaps allow you to extend new services to your patrons.
