1) PUBLIC LIBRARY LAPTOP LAB GRANT CYCLE OPEN

Applications are being accepted for a Laptop Training Lab 2009 grant. The purpose of the grant cycle is to provide placement of laptop training labs in four qualifying public library systems in Washington State. Granted equipment will include ten laptops, a data projector, software, storage cases, and wireless broadband routers.

This grant cycle is funded with Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) funds and includes computers providing access to the Internet. Compliance with CIPA (the Children’s Internet Protection Act) and submission of a CIPA certification form is required. All qualifying public library systems in Washington State – those libraries that have been created under authority of the Revised Code of Washington (RCW) Chapter 27.12 – may apply.

Award of grants will include emphasis on geographic disbursement across the state and the library’s ability to use and maintain the equipment. 3) FREE WEBINAR – OPEN SOURCE ILS ADD-ONS

Software that dramatically extends and expands the capabilities of your library system software fall into two main categories: discovery interface and metasearch. This presentation will focus on Open Source software that is available to supplement your library system, regardless of whether you are using an Open Source Library System like Koha or Evergreen or a proprietary system like Millennium, CARL, or Horizon.

During this presentation, participants will understand the importance of providing users a unified discovery interface for all library resources and will learn about four viable Open Source discovery interface products that are in use at libraries today (SOPAC2, Blacklight, Scriblio, VuFind).

4) CONNECT TROUBLED TEENS WITH THE POWER OF READING

Applications for the next round of Great Stories CLUB grants are being accepted through November 2. The Great Stories CLUB (Connecting Libraries, Underserved teens and Books) is a book club program designed to reach underserved, troubled teen populations through books that are relevant to their lives.

All types of libraries (public, school, academic and special) located within or working in partnership with facilities serving troubled teens in the United States and its territories are eligible to apply for a Great Stories CLUB grant. Potential organizations for partnership include juvenile justice facilities, drug rehabilitation centers, nonprofits serving teen parents, alternative high schools, agencies serving teenaged foster children, shelters serving homeless and runaway youth and other agencies.

5) WORLDCAT MASHATHON IN SEATTLE NOV. 5-6

Ready to mash? Join fellow WorldCat Affiliates, developers and tech-enthusiasts for the next WorldCat Mashathon in Seattle, Nov. 5-6. Sponsored by the OCLC Developer Network and the University of Washington libraries, the WorldCat Mashathon will be held Thursday and Friday at the University of Washington, Odegaard Undergraduate Library.

Participants will spend the two days brainstorming and coding mash-ups with local systems and other Web services to take advantage of all that WorldCat, the world’s largest and most comprehensive bibliographic database, has to offer. Developers from the library community and beyond are encouraged to attend. The cost is $30.00.
