Library News

Advocates of Vancouver’s historic downtown have rolled up their sleeves and sprung into action after a six-month crash course on how to revitalize the area.  The largest project in size and cost is a $38 million, five-story public library, set to open in 2011 for the Fort Vancouver Regional Library District. http://www.columbian.com/news/2010/oct/03/small-projects-could-lead-to-bigger-things-for-dow/

Mayor Dean Maxwell’s $39 million draft 2011 budget was presented to the Anacortes City Council Monday. Maxwell told the council that the 2011 budget includes $41,836 for new library materials.  At the same time, the facility is reducing the number of staff computer terminals and printers to lower costs, will discontinue several periodicals, and will drop two out-of-area newspapers.  The library also will experiment with three-day closures over holiday weekends to save staff and facility costs.  (Anacortes American, 10.6.10)

Ref22: Mastering the Reference Interview

Tuesday, October 12th, 2010 Posted in Articles, For Libraries, Training and Continuing Education | Comments Off on Ref22: Mastering the Reference Interview

Ref22-Logo Did you miss out on the live Ref22 webinar this week? Never fear! All Ref22 sessions are archived and available on the website at Ref22: Archived Sessions.

For our October session we had Christa Werle  from Sno-Isle Libraries talking about mastering the reference interview. Check it out!

Whatever our official status, our users think of us all simply as “the librarian.” Join us during October’s Ref22 to discuss how library staff of all levels can engage (and sometimes disengage) our users to best meet their information needs.

Sno-Isle Libraries offers this training quarterly to all staff that work at a public information or customer service desk. The training is a mix of “Reference 101” (for paraprofessionals) and “Reference Refresher” (for librarians).

With a focus on working as a team, this training reminds us of our best practices in how to be a community doorway to reading, resources, and lifelong learning.

Library News

The Selah Public Library, a part of the Yakima Valley Regional Library system, is moving.across the street.  For the last 42 years, residents of Selah have turned many pages in the building the library shares with City Hall.  Now they’ll have a larger place; part of an agreement designed to help both the library and the city.  (Photo)  (Yakima Valley Business Times, 9.10.10)

Mount Vernon Library Director Brian Soneda is excited about the role his library and other area libraries serve for residents hard-pressed in a struggling economy.  Soneda, also a project coordinator with Washington State Library’s Renew Washington project, has been working to raise the public awareness about using libraries as a first-tier resource.  (Photo) (Skagit Valley Herald [Mount Vernon], 9.26.10)

A new digital collection from the Washington Rural Heritage initiative highlights the history of Skamania County, located in the heart of Washington’s rugged Columbia River Gorge. For their 2009-2010 grant project, the Stevenson and North Bonneville Community Libraries (Fort Vancouver Regional Library District) worked with local residents and partners to digitize unique material telling the story of life in these communities. The result is a digital collection consisting of two sub-collections and over 250 items.

In June, 2010 after extensive planning and outreach to local residents, the Stevenson Community Library held its first “History in Pictures” day–a community-based digitization event aimed at gathering historically significant material held in local private collections. The event occurred on a Saturday, in the main room of the Stevenson Community Library. There, staff and members of the Library’s Friends group interviewed contributors, secured necessary permissions (to publish material online), and recorded detailed information about the originals–describing their content as well as their physical format and dimensions. Staff from the Washington State Library were on hand to assist with imaging the materials, which were then returned to their owners along with a digital copy. The event was a resounding success. A few of our favorite “finds” include:

Another important achievement of this grant project was the creation of the North Bonneville Collection which documents the relocation of the town of North Bonneville during the construction of the Bonneville Dam’s second powerhouse in the 1970s. The collection documents everything from: early negotiations with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers; to images of “Old Town North Bonneville” as it was being razed; to construction of new town facilities and final dedication of the “New” North Bonneville in 1978. The material was contributed by the City of North Bonneville, which generously opened its archives to help create this unique and valuable educational resource.

Congratulations and a big thank you to the entire crew at the Stevenson and North Bonneville Community Libraries. They spent many hours forming local partnerships, managing the project, cataloging materials, and learning all the hands-on technical minutiae involved in digitization. The results speak for themselves!
