1) LETTERS ABOUT LITERATURE – NATIONAL WINNER

The Washington State Library is very pleased to announce that one of this year’s Letters About Literature state champions, Abby Bateman, a seventh grader at Snoqualmie Middle School in Snoqualmie, has been selected as an award winner at the national level. This is the fourth time in six years that Washington has had a national winner!

2) TIPS AND TRICKS FOR COMMUNITY READS

Tips and Tricks for Community Reads is the title for the June 7, 2011, First Tuesdays program from the Washington State Library. Hear how three different types of organizations produce outstanding Community Reads:

  • Panelist Theresa Percy, Port Townsend City Library, will relate what she and her staff have learned over many years to generate a high level of enthusiasm in the community over this annual event.
  • Courtney Schrieve, Community Relations Director for the North Thurston School District, has produced an event at the district level for several years that celebrates reading for families and children from Kindergarten on up.
  • Gwendolyn Haley has been one of Spokane County Library District’s point people in the county-wide reading program that involves libraries ranging from the university, to the school, to the public. She will share the planning that is necessary to ensure that activities involving multiple agencies are well-coordinated.

To join the presentation, visit www.sos.wa.gov/quicklinks/FirstTuesdays. First Tuesdays is a free, online, monthly presentation from the Washington State Library, held from 9:00 – 10:00 a.m. PDT on the first Tuesday of each month. For more information, visit www.sos.wa.gov/quicklinks/tuesdays.

4) CELEBRATE ASIAN-PACIFIC AMERICAN HERITAGE MONTH

May is Asian-Pacific American Heritage Month, which celebrates the many contributions of Asians and Pacific Islanders to this country’s life and culture. The month of May was chosen to commemorate the immigration of the first Japanese to the United States on May 7, 1843, and to mark the anniversary of the completion of the transcontinental railroad on May 10, 1869. The majority of workers who laid the tracks were Chinese immigrants.

The Library of Congress, National Archives and Records Administration, National Endowment for the Humanities, National Gallery of Art, National Park Service, Smithsonian Institution, and the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum are joining together to pay tribute to the generations of Asian and Pacific Islanders who have enriched America’s history and who are instrumental for its future success. Visit Asian-Pacific American Heritage Month – Diversity, Leadership, Empowerment and Beyond at asianpacificheritage.gov.
