2) FREE MEDICAL REFERENCE WORKSHOPS

Dark chocolate, red wine, and stem cells – what do these have in common? All have been reported in the news as having health benefits. Often the first place your patrons will hear about health issues is in the media.

Health Issues in the Headlines – Learning to Read Between the Lines, is an interactive, hands-on, CE session where participants will learn how health is reported in the news and will discover how to evaluate the accuracy and validity of science and health stories. The impact of celebrity illness will also be discussed. By the end of this session, participants will be better equipped to help their patrons look more critically at health issues that are being reported in the news media. Actual news articles and research reports will be included for critique.

Presented by Gail Kouame, NN/LM PNR, University of Washington. Workshops have been scheduled for several locations:

  • July 25, 8:30 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.

3) FREE COPIES OF CANNERY ROW

Kitsap Regional Library has generously offered to share gently-used copies of John Steinbeck’s Cannery Row that they had received from an NEA Big Read grant. If your library could use gently used copies of Cannery Row for community reads or book club kits, the Washington State Library will be happy to send them to any Washington library. There are just over 100 copies available. Please contact Carolyn Petersen at [email protected] or toll-free at 1-866-538-4996 if you are interested.

4) EBOOK READER PILOT PROJECT

The Washington State Library (WSL) is aware that various libraries in the state have experimented with, or plan to try out, eBook readers. In response to this interest, WSL is in the planning stages of a pilot project that will be centered on the use of eBook readers in Washington libraries. The project intends to purchase eBook readers with $25,000 in LSTA variance funds. An application process is currently being developed that will enable libraries to participate in this pilot. Applications will be available on July 5, 2011, and will be due back to the Washington State Library by July 29, 2011.

To help shape this pilot program, the Washington State Library encourages Washington libraries to complete a short survey at www.sos.wa.gov/quicklinks/eBkSurvey no later than 5:00 p.m., Friday, June 24, 2011.

Please contact Carolyn Petersen at [email protected] or toll-free at 1-866-538-4996 if you have any questions about the pilot.

5) SCHOLARSHIPS FOR SMALL AND RURAL LIBRARIES

Washington State Library, with funding from the Library Services Technology Act (LSTA), invites applicants to apply for a full grant to attend the 2011 Association of Rural and Small Libraries (ARSL) conference in Frisco, Texas, from September 8 – 11, 2011; or the American Bookmobile and Outreach Services (ABOS) conference in Cleveland, Ohio, from October 13 – 15, 2011. The ARSL conference is specifically targeted for rural librarians, providing cutting-edge solutions to small-library needs. This year’s theme is “keeping your head while serving the community.” The ABOS conference is focused on staff that do outreach using a bookmobile or similar vehicle. Their theme this year has yet to be announced at this time. Scholarships will include air transportation, all conference fees, and will cover full per diem.

To be eligible for scholarships, applicants must:

  • Work at a small and rural library (serving 10,000 or fewer) in Washington state;
  • Not have previously attended an ARSL or ABOS conference;
  • Commit to a follow-up project (e.g., webinar, printed article, blog post, etc.);
  • Demonstrate a willingness to share knowledge gained with fellow library/district staffers;
  • Show how conference attendance will help meet their library’s goals related to the six LSTA priorities;
  • Have signed permission from a person in their organization who has the authority to approve their attendance at the conference. (Please attach this with your application.)

Applications are due no later than July 20, 2011. If you have any questions or would like an application form, please contact Carolyn Petersen at [email protected] , 360-570-5560, or toll-free 1-866-538-4996.
