3) DON’T MISS THIS YEAR’S EARLY LEARNING SYMPOSIUM

Register now to attend the third annual symposium presented by the Early Learning Public Library Partnership (ELPLP). Dr. Rebecca Cortes from the UW Center for Child and Family Well-being and Dr. Gina Lebedeva from the UW I-LABS will be the keynote speakers. Breakout sessions include:

• “Come and Play at the Library!” – Gwendolyn Haley and Mary Ellen Braks will share what they learned when the Spokane County Library District expanded preschool story times in all ten branches to include a playtime;
• “Early Learning Guidelines” – Jennifer Jennings-Schaffer will talk about the Early Learning and Development Guidelines (formerly Benchmarks) redesign, including the process and rationale for the revision, as well as an overview of what is included in the new draft. Most importantly, this session will provide an opportunity for those attending the Symposium to share their input on the draft Guidelines;
• “Accessing and Integrating Alternative Format Materials in Early Learning” – Danielle Miller will provide information about utilizing materials from the Washington Talking Book and Braille Library and other resources that encourage and enable children with visual, physical, or learning disabilities to read early and often. The session will cover Braille, tactile graphics, large print, and audio materials;
• “Early Math Matters” – Laurie Sjolund will demonstrate why foundational math skills are critical to children’s later learning and development and will share math standards for children preschool to third grade. The session will include information and strategies on how adults can help children to develop these basic skills.

Symposium information:

4) SEEKING NOMINATIONS FOR CUTTING-EDGE LIBRARIES

The American Library Association’s (ALA) Office for Information Technology Policy (OITP) and the Library & Information Technology Association (LITA) are soliciting nominations for best library practices using cutting-edge technology. “Cutting edge” refers to tested and successful implementations of technological advancements used in services such as:

• Improvements in traditional services and processes by inventing/reinventing/twisting technology;
• Introduction of new, innovative services that are flexible and responsive to community needs;
• Methods for connecting libraries to their communities;
• Funding initiatives or organizational models that ensure library information technology will remain current.

Nominations must:

• Involve the use of technology;
• Be a novel idea or implementation of a service;
• Be able to be documented for replication;
• Be for a library that has been involved in the development of the service or product.

5) SCHOLARSHIPS AVAILABLE FOR 2012 ALA MIDWINTER MEETING

The American Library Association (ALA) and EBSCO are partnering to offer five scholarships for ALA members to attend the 2012 ALA Midwinter Meeting in Dallas. The meeting takes place January 20 – 24, 2012, and offers an opportunity for continuing education, meetings, and interaction with colleagues.

Each EBSCO scholarship will be in the amount of $1,500, and one of the five scholarships will be awarded to a first-time conference attendee. The scholarship money is to be used for conference registration, travel, and expenses. To apply, candidates must complete the application criteria and submit an essay that addresses the following topic: “If you could change anything about your current workplace or job responsibilities, how would you position them to meet future needs?” Essays and applications will be judged by a jury designated by ALA.
