1) LSTA FIVE-YEAR EVALUATION SURVEY
As part of our required review of Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) funding from the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) and our continuing efforts to support a variety of library development programs and projects in Washington, the Washington State Library (WSL) is asking all library staff in the state (public, academic, special, and others) to complete a five-year evaluation survey. The purpose of this survey is to find out how the library community in Washington perceives the efficacy of LSTA programs, where it could improve, and what unmet needs might be targeted in future LSTA-related programs.
The survey is being administered and hosted by the University of Washington Information School U.S. IMPACT Study Research Group. Your responses will form part of their evaluation report to the IMLS about LSTA grant activities in the state of Washington for the past five years. The University of Washington will not share any personally identifiable information from your responses with the WSL and your answers will not affect your library’s ability to obtain future grant funding from the WSL; however, they are critical to ensuring continued WSL services and technology support to the libraries in the state.
Please complete this important survey by December 2, 2011. If you have received an email invitation directly from the University of Washington to take this survey, please access the survey via the link included in that email. There are 33 primary questions on this survey, with some follow-up questions depending on your responses and whether you, or your library, have participated in LSTA-funded programs. 2) ASK YOUR COLLEAGUES ABOUT EBOOK DEVICES
Thinking about how you might train staff or the public about eBook devices? Toying with the idea of circulating eBook devices, but hesitating because you would like to know more about them?
Find out more next week by attending a free series of four online webinars where participants in the Washington State Library eBook pilot project will share what they have learned so far. A cross-section of presenters from libraries in Washington’s community colleges, middle schools, and high schools, and from both big system public libraries and independent city libraries, will share their experience in dealing with training and circulation issues related to eBooks. Each session will feature a number of speakers, followed by a question and answer period.

3) POET LAUREATE APPLICATIONS SOUGHT
Applications are now being accepted for the 2012 – 2014 Washington State Poet Laureate position. The Poet Laureate serves to build awareness and appreciation of poetry – including the state’s legacy of poetry – through public readings, workshops, lectures, and presentations in communities, schools, colleges and universities, and other public settings across the state. The selected Poet Laureate will develop a two-year plan of activities, in consultation with the Washington State Arts Commission and Humanities Washington.
Qualified applicants must meet the following eligibility requirements:
- Be a current resident of the state of Washington;
- Have had at least one full-length book of poetry published by an established press;
- Be engaged in the poetry community;
- Be willing and able to promote poetry and the legacy of poetry throughout Washington State for a two-year period.
Applications must be submitted electronically no later than 5:00 p.m. PST on November 30, 2011. 4) JOIN THE VIDEOCONFERENCING LIBRARIANS INTEREST GROUP
Libraries of all shapes and sizes are discovering the power of videoconferencing and video webcasting to bring a world of experiences and expertise to the communities they serve. These technologies also offer unprecedented opportunities for libraries to share knowledge, cultural activities, and other important events in our communities with the rest of the world.
As part of the “K-20 Librarian” project, the Internet2 K20 Initiative invites public, school, and academic librarians to join in the inaugural meeting of the “Videoconferencing Librarians Interest Group.” This will be an opportunity for librarians from all across the country to collaborate and support each other around the wealth of possibilities that videoconferencing affords. Possible topics to explore may include:
- Learning how other librarians are using videoconferencing (both current and aspirational);
- Sharing lessons learned, best practices, and solutions to common challenges;
- Discussing possible collaborative programming opportunities between libraries;
- Exchanging information on available grant sources to build videoconferencing capacity.
The Kansas Research and Education Network (Kan-Ren) has generously offered to provide MCU video bridging services for up to 8 meeting participants with v.323 videoconferencing capabilities. These slots will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis. For those participants who do not have access to videoconferencing capability, a phone bridge will be made available.

5) USING WEB 2.0 TO PROMOTE LIBRARIES
Do Web 2.0 applications and social networking tools play a role in promoting library programs and services? If so, to what extent are they used? What are some of the reasons for using them, or not using them? Many libraries employ a wide range of them, while others use none. Why?
Curtis Rogers, from the South Carolina State Library, is currently compiling data for the fourth “Using Web 2.0 to Market and Promote Libraries in the U.S.” survey, which is open to all libraries. The survey gathers feedback from a wide variety of library staff in the United States to determine how libraries are employing Web 2.0 and social networking tools to promote library programs and services.
