1) LETTERS ABOUT LITERATURE 2012

There is still time to submit entries for the annual Letters About Literature contest. Please encourage the teachers and students at your school or in your library area to participate. Homeschoolers are welcome as well. Entries must be postmarked by January 6, 2012.

To learn about this year’s contest or to print one of the two entry forms (school or library group entry, individual entry) and the participation guidelines for your library patrons, please visit the Washington State Library’s website at www.sos.wa.gov/quicklinks/LAL2012.

2) WANTED – OCTOBER 1, 2008 ISSUE OF DEER PARK TRIBUNE

The Washington State Library (WSL) is currently preparing some Washington newspapers for microfilming, in accordance with its legal mandate to serve as a depository for the state’s newspapers. WSL is missing the October 1, 2008 issue of the Deer Park Tribune, one of the papers about to be microfilmed this month. Unfortunately, the publisher no longer has this particular issue. If your library has this issue and is willing to lend it (or donate it) to the Washington State Library, please contact Leslie Boyter at [email protected] or 360-704-5220 by Monday, November 28, 2011. Your assistance is greatly appreciated!

3) GRANT TO HELP THE UNDERSERVED

The Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC), a division of the American Library Association (ALA), and Candlewick Press are currently accepting applications for the “Light the Way: Outreach to the Underserved” grant, created to honor Newbery Medalist and Geisel Honoree author Kate DiCamillo and the themes represented in her books. The award consists of a $3,000 grant to assist a library in conducting exemplary outreach to underserved populations through a new program or an expansion of work already being done.

Grant applications should describe a program or service that will address one or more of the following special populations:

  • Those with learning or physical differences;
  • Those who speak English as a second language;
  • Those who are in a non-traditional school environment;
  • Those who are in non-traditional family settings (such as teen parents, foster children, children in the juvenile justice system, and children in gay and lesbian families);
  • Those who need accommodation to meet their needs

ALA membership is a requirement for this grant. For additional information, including a link to the application, go to www.sos.wa.gov/quicklinks/Light. Questions? Contact Paula Holmes, the chair of the Library Service to Special Population Children and their Caregivers Committee (LSSPCC), at [email protected]. Applications and supporting materials must be postmarked or emailed by December 1, 2011.

4) NEED HELP WITH COLLECTION DEVELOPMENT PROJECTS?

The Alibris Collection Award is an annual grant of books to an academic, public, special, or K-12 library supporting specific collection development projects that advance the mission, priority areas, and goals of the library. The purpose of the Award is to help provide materials for libraries with replacement projects, retrospective collection development projects, or routine collection building needs.

Each applying library must provide an online wish list of desired titles, along with a statement of interest concerning the desired collection and needs of its particular library. For more information about the grant, visit www.sos.wa.gov/quicklinks/AlibrisCD, e-mail [email protected], or call 1-877-ALIBRIS (1-877-254-2747).

5) DO YOU HAVE AN OUTSTANDING YOUTH SERVICES PROGRAM?

The Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA), a division of ALA, is now accepting applications for the ABC-CLIO/Greenwood/YALSA Service to Young Adults Achievement Award. This grant of $2,000 is funded by ABC-CLIO/Greenwood and is given out every other year (applications are accepted during odd years only). The grant recognizes a member who has demonstrated unique and sustained devotion to young adult services through substantial work in any two or more of the following initiatives:

  • The promotion of library services for young adults;
  • Conducting and publishing research for young adults;
  • Publication or presentation of knowledge or best practices relating to young adult literature or library services for young adults;
  • Advocating for young adult literature or library services for young adults;
  • Mentoring of other professionals in the field of young adult literature or library services;
  • Notable efforts in furthering the mission of YALSA

One recipient will be designated every two years. If no suitable candidate is found, the jury will remain active and present an award the following year.
