1) RAND SIMMONS NAMED WASHINGTON STATE LIBRARIAN

Kim Wyman, who will be sworn in as Washington’s fifteenth Secretary of State, announced her choices for her executive team last Friday, December 7, after consulting with outgoing Secretary of State Sam Reed, senior managers, and others both inside and outside of government. In her e-mail, she described the team as “a mix of people from within and outside the office, with a wide variety of experience and perspectives.”

Rand Simmons was officially named to the position of Washington State Librarian effective January 16, 2013, when the new Secretary of State takes office. Rand has been Acting State Librarian since September 2010. 2) DON’T MISS THE DEADLINE FOR WLA SCHOLARSHIPS

Each year, the Washington Library Association (WLA) awards one or more scholarships, up to $6,000 per recipient, to WLA members who are enrolled in an ALA-accredited MLIS degree program and have completed at least one semester or quarter. Applicants are evaluated based on demonstrated potential for leadership in the profession and commitment to libraries and library service. 3) ONLINE NW – IT’S NOT TOO LATE FOR THE EARLY BIRD

Online Northwest is a one-day conference focusing on topics that intersect libraries, technology, and culture. This year’s conference will include presentations on digital literacy, e-readers, distance learning, and digital collections. The keynote speaker will be Virginia Eubanks, author of Digital Dead End: Fighting for Social Justice in the Information Age.

4) CALL FOR SPEAKERS – BIG TALK FROM SMALL LIBRARIES

Do you have a program or service in your small library that other librarians might like to hear about? Have you implemented a new (or old) technology, hosted an event, partnered with others in your community, or just done something that created a buzz? The Big Talk From Small Libraries online conference can give you the opportunity to share what you’ve done and learn what your colleagues in other small libraries are doing. This free one-day conference is aimed at librarians from small libraries – the smaller the better.

Speakers from libraries serving fewer than 10,000 people will be given first priority, but presentations from libraries with larger service populations will be considered. 5) FREE CLASS – CARING FOR THE MIND

The National Network of Libraries of Medicine, Pacific Northwest Region (NN/LM PNR) is pleased to offer a free online consumer health class, Caring for the Mind: Providing Reference Services for Mental Health Information. Nikki Dettmar, Education and Assessment Coordinator, will be facilitating the asynchronous course, in which participants will learn:

• How to effectively provide mental health information at their libraries;
• Which are the best consumer health resources to consult;
• The best approaches for handling interactions with emotional patrons.

Course information:

• When: Monday, December 17, 2012 – Sunday, January 20, 2013;
• Cost: Free;
• Registration: Required. All are welcome, but priority will be given to those in the Pacific Northwest;
• Contact hours: 3 Medical Library Association Continuing education contact hours will be available to participants successfully completing the course.
