1) DIGITAL LITERACY IN WASHINGTON LIBRARIES

On a national level, much is happening in the areas of digital literacy and digital inclusion, including the EveryoneOn initiative (see Item #5). The Library Development Program of the Washington State Library is currently working on a Digital Literacy portal to help libraries promote digital literacy in Washington. To help design this portal, WSL is seeking input from all types of libraries in the state, asking them to take the Digital Literacy in Washington Libraries survey to let us know what they are doing to support digital literacy in their communities and what the State Library can do to help.

To take the survey, go to www.surveymonkey.com/s/diglitwa. Please note that all questions are optional and sections may be skipped if not of interest. Questions? Contact Jennifer Fenton at [email protected] or 360.570.5571. The survey will close on Friday, April 5, 2013.

2) GRANTS FOR EARLY LEARNING

The Washington State Library, thanks to a partnership with the Department of Early Learning (DEL), has opened a grant cycle for Early Achievers Outreach Partnership (EAOP) grants, funded by a Race to the Top – Early Learning Challenge grant awarded to DEL by the U.S. Department of Education. The grants are designed to:

  • Help local public libraries partner with DEL to build awareness of key early learning initiatives among Washington families;
  • Identify best practices for future partnerships between public libraries and DEL on early learning public awareness and family engagement initiatives.

All public libraries in Washington State are encouraged to apply. Applications may be submitted from an individual public library or a public library system. WSL reserves the right to limit the number and amount of awards to public library systems in order to ensure that funds are distributed in regions where there are local efforts to increase Early Achievers participation. Up to 50 library mini-grants of no less than $500 and no more than $1,000 per qualifying outlet will be awarded in collaboration with the Early Learning Public Library Partnership (ELPLP). Overall funding to support this grant cycle is $25,000.

The deadline to apply is Friday, March 29, 2013. More details may be found at www.sos.wa.gov/quicklinks/grants. Information about Early Achievers may be found at www.sos.wa.gov/quicklinks/EarlyAchievers. Questions? Contact Martha Shinners, EAOP Project Manager, 360.570.5567, [email protected], or Diane Hutchins, 360.704.7137, [email protected].

5) CALL TO ACTION – EVERYONEON DIGITAL LITERACY CAMPAIGN

On March 21, 2013, Connect2Compete (C2C) will launch a 3-year national public service campaign, EveryoneOn, designed to raise awareness of the importance of digital literacy skills, which libraries have embraced for years. The key message is to encourage limited or non-Internet users to learn how to do “one thing better online.” This is a great opportunity to promote public libraries as a trusted and valuable provider of free access to technology and training as we strive to build stronger communities.

Using information from the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) and ALA, C2C has created a Training Locator tool that will help people to find digital literacy training or access to public computers in their area. As part of the preparation for the launch of EveryoneOn, C2C is asking all public libraries to update the Training Locator database with details about the services and resources each location/branch currently makes available to help people acquire digital literacy skills or access the Internet. Reviewing and updating a library’s record should take about 5 minutes for each location.

More information about the campaign, as well as instructions and a link for updating the Training Locator database, may be found at www.sos.wa.gov/quicklinks/C2CUpdate. Additional campaign materials for EveryoneOn, including logos, graphics, and examples of public service announcements, are expected later this month.
