The Fall City Elementary School Library was packed with students and adults, and a nervous tension was in the air. Students were competing in the final Battle of the Books, the culmination of a contest that has been running since December. “I love the enthusiasm for reading that happens with the Battle of the Books,” Meg Handy, librarian at Fall City Elementary, said. A Snohomish man has been arrested for investigation of downloading child pornography from a city library computer onto a cellphone. The suspect, 55, is being held on $100,000 bail. No charges have yet been filed. All computers in the Sno-Isle Libraries system have Internet filters, but library users 17 and older can choose an option to have unfiltered Internet access. Their mission is literacy. They fund it through book sales. The nonprofit group called Friends of the Mill Creek Library wants people to read, especially children. The group spends more than 70 percent of its annual $11,000 budget on library programs for children and teens. Friends has about 30 members, 10 of whom are active on a regular basis. Kelso quilter Candee Martello recently donated a quilt to the Friends of the Kelso Library for the group’s yearly fundraiser event. Raffle tickets are $1 each. The lucky ticket will be drawn at the Friends of the Kelso Library book sale set for November 1st. (Photo) (Daily News [Longview], 5.25.13)
Buildings
The Port Orchard Library, a part of the Kitsap Regional Library System, will get a minor facelift – inside only. Plans include moving the magazine section from the back to the front of the building and changing the configuration of the computer terminals upfront. Northwest Indian College plans to begin construction on its 12,710-square-foot Coast Salish Institute Building in May, while work continues on a nearly $3 million library and technology building that broke ground in February. The Pierce County Library Foundation, in partnership with the Paul G. Allen Family Foundation, plans to build an interactive discovery platform to provide a richer reading experience for customers of the Pierce County Library System (PCLS) through the use of online gaming techniques. PCLS is looking for a qualified individual or firm to provide game, graphic, and other design expertise to this project. Submissions will be accepted until 3 p.m., Monday, June 24th. Shannon Peterson, Youth Services coordinator for Kitsap Regional Library, was named the 2013 recipient of the Children’s and Young Adults Services (CAYAS) Award for Visionary Service to Youth at last week’s Washington Library Association Conference in Vancouver. Lynnwood Library volunteer Jessie Larson was presented with a Gold Level Presidential Service Award for the volunteer work she completed in 2012 for Sno-Isle Libraries. Larson was recognized for 756 hours of volunteering with the library district. (The Seattle Times, 6.2.13)
Programs & Displays
Kitsap Regional Library (KRL) will begin a pilot program circulating video games playable on Wii and Xbox Kinect machines starting May 6. “People may ask why the library is lending video games,” said Melody Eisler, librarian and manager of KRL’s Silverdale Branch Library. “Video games are great learning tools and help promote literacy.” (Central Kitsap Reporter [Silverdale], 5.3.13)
“Groundbreaking Reads” is the theme for Everett Public Library’s 2013 Adult Summer Reading Challenge. Groundbreaking books of the reader’s choice, including fiction or nonfiction, new or not-so-new releases, can be explored. Registration began June 1. The program is open to those age 17 and older and will run through August 31.
