1) WANTED – GRANT & CONTRACT SPECIALIST

The Office of the Secretary of State and Washington State Library are recruiting for a full-time permanent Grant and Contract Specialist in the Olympia/Tumwater area. The position is located within the Library Development Program of the Washington State Library, Office of the Secretary of State. The Grant and Contract Specialist provides primary administrative support for the Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) operations and grant administration activities. These activities include, but are not limited to, federal LSTA grant program development and administration, support for the Library Council of Washington (LCW), and records management. 2) FIRST TUESDAYS – GETTING TO KNOW THE STATE LAW LIBRARY

Have you ever hit a roadblock when answering a legal question? Don’t know where to turn for help? The Washington State Law Library is here to assist you. Mark your calendar now for the next First Tuesdays program, Getting to Know the State Law Library: an introduction to the Washington State Law Library, who we are and how we can help you. On October 1, 2013, from 9:00 to 10:00 a.m. PDT, State Law librarian, Kay Newman, and her colleagues will provide an overview of the Library’s collection and services, lead a tour of the redesigned website, and provide examples of when you should contact them for help.

Designed as a continuing education opportunity for staff of libraries in Washington State, these free First Tuesdays web presentations lets attendees share their skills and successes and learn about new topics. 3) FOCUS GROUPS FOR LIBRARY SPACE INNOVATION GRANT

As libraries re-imagine their role in the community, they are developing innovative spaces and programming that serve to actively support community engagement, collaboration and creativity. As part of a grant from the Allen Family Foundation, WebJunction is developing a resource guide for libraries pursuing these new directions and will be hosting two focus groups in Washington to bring together public library representatives to share their knowledge and insights related to community engagement and space innovations. These focus groups will recommend resources to aid libraries in their efforts, and advise the creation of a resource guide for libraries.

Sessions will include presenters who will discuss their experiences, but a primary focus for the day will be on group discussion and knowledge sharing. This will be an opportunity for participants to inform the practice of space planning and innovation in services, as well as to learn from other practitioners. Travel expenses, including cost of lodging, will be covered for participants and meals and refreshments will be provided for attendees. Participants may attend one of the following two sessions (same content is covered in both), which will be held from 10:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. PDT:

• October 7, Richland, Washington;
• October 11, Federal Way, Washington.

If you have experience with, and/or interest in innovating your library’s space or services to encourage community engagement, and you are interested in participating – we want to hear from you! Focus groups are primarily geared toward library directors or staff who have space planning or innovation work as part of their job responsibilities. 4) DOES YOUR LIBRARY DESERVE A MEDAL?

The Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) is seeking nominations for the National Medal for Museum and Library Service, the nation’s highest honor for exemplary museum and library community service. Institutions awarded this honor are recognized for making extraordinary civic, educational, economic, environmental, and social contributions. Recipient institutions will receive:

• The National Medal, awarded at a ceremony held in Washington, D.C.;
• $5,000;
• The opportunity to have the life stories of members of their community recorded and preserved at the American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress.

5) LIBRARY 2.013 CONFERENCE PROPOSALS SOLICITED

Library 2.013 Worldwide Virtual Conference, the third annual global conversation about the future of libraries, is scheduled for October 18 & 19, 2013. This year’s conference will feature two additional strands: 1) Doctoral Student Research and 2) Library and Information Center “Tours.” Other strands are:

• Digital Services, Preservation, and Access;
• Emerging Technologies and Trends;
• Learning Commons (for school libraries and/or academic libraries);
• Management of Libraries and Information Centers in the 21^st Century;
• User Centered Services and Models;
• Library and Information Professionals – Evolving Roles and Opportunities.

Doctoral students are especially encouraged to take advantage of this exciting opportunity to present their research and hone their online presentation skills.
