1) GIVING KIDS A FOUNDATION FOR LIFETIME SUCCESS

A project of the Annie E. Casey Foundation, KIDS COUNT® is the premier source for data on child and family well-being in the United States. The Annie E. Casey Foundation’s latest KIDS COUNT® policy report, The First Eight Years: Giving Kids a Foundation for Lifetime Success, presents a strong case for investing in the early years of a child’s life. The report includes data on early childhood development for every state, the District of Columbia and the nation. To find out more and to link to the report, visit sos.wa.gov/q/First8.

Additional information is available from the KIDS COUNT® Data Center, which also contains the most recent national, state and local data on hundreds of indicators of child well-being. The Data Center allows users to create rankings, maps, and graphs for use in publications and on websites, and to view real-time information on mobile devices. State data may be further refined by county, congressional district, or city. By providing high-quality data and trend analysis through its KIDS COUNT® Data Center, the Foundation seeks to enrich local, state and national discussions concerning ways to secure better futures for all children — and to raise the visibility of children’s issues through a nonpartisan, evidence-based lens. The 2013 KIDS COUNT® Data Book provides a detailed picture of how children are faring in the United States, and makes effective use of graphics to convey the information. In addition to ranking states on overall child well-being, the Data Book ranks states in four domains: Economic Well-Being, Education, Health, and Family and Community. The Data Book, as well as links to an “Interactive Wheel” for exploring state-level data, infographics, a mobile site that allows users to view and share state and community data on the fly, and custom data reports, may be found by going to sos.wa.gov/q/KC2013DB.

2) NEED MORE ROMANCE?

The Romance Writers of America Library Grant, presented by the Public Library Association and the Romance Writers of America, is designed to provide the opportunity for a public library to build or expand its romance fiction collection and/or host romance fiction programming. The grant consists of $4,500 to be used toward the purchase of romance fiction, author honorariums and travel expenses, and other applicable program expenses. Any size public library may apply, although priority will be given to libraries with a financial need or in disaster recovery areas that are trying to rebuild their romance fiction collections. 3) LAURA BUSH FOUNDATION SCHOOL LIBRARY GRANTS

The Laura Bush Foundation for America’s Libraries School Library Grant program provides grants of up to $5,000 to individual schools to help their libraries expand, update, and diversify their book collections, giving preference to those in which 90 percent or more of the students receive free or reduced lunches and are likely to have the fewest books and reading materials at home.

Schools serving any combination of pre-kindergarten through high school students in all fifty states, the District of Columbia, all American territories, and Department of Defense schools in other countries are eligible to apply. Funds are only available for library books and magazine/serial copies and subscriptions.

4) FRANCES HENNE/YALSA/VOYA RESEARCH GRANT

The mission of the Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA), a division of ALA, is to expand and strengthen library services for teens and young adults. Each year, the Frances Henne/YALSA/VOYA (Voice of Youth Advocates) Research Grant provides $1,000 in seed money to support small-scale research projects that respond to YALSA’s vision, mission, goals, and research agenda. Applicants must be personal members of YALSA, including student members, although the research project may be undertaken by an individual, an institution, or by a group. Proposals are limited to two pages plus an additional page for biographical information. For additional information, go to sos.wa.gov/q/YALSAHenne. Applications are due Sunday, December 1, 2013.

5) REWARDING INNOVATIVE ELECTRONIC RESOURCES MANAGEMENT

The Ingram Coutts Award for Innovation in Electronic Resources Management, sponsored by the Collection Management Section (CMS) of ALCTS (the Association for Library Collections and Technical Services, a division of ALA), recognizes significant and innovative contributions to electronic collections management and development practice. The winner receives a citation and a $2,000 award generously donated by Ingram Coutts Information Services. Criteria for selection of the award recipient will be determined by the person’s achievements, including but not limited to:

• Building and managing new types of electronic collections and materials;
• Addressing selection issues and processes for electronic resources;
• Creating effective organizational structures for the workflow management and development of electronic resource collections;
• Increasing visibility, discovery, and user access to electronic library resources.
