1) FREE WORKSHOP – LEADING WITHOUT AUTHORITY

Years ago, if you were in a position of authority, you could just announce what needed to be done and assume it would be carried out. But times have changed. Now, as organizations have expanded and have become increasingly more complex, no matter what the formal hierarchies are, people must work with each other across reporting lines. It doesn’t work to say, “Do it because I told you so.” Leading from any position requires a higher level of leadership and influencing skills.

Leading Without Authority is a new workshop from WSL, presented by Cyndi Schaeffer, the King County Human Resources Division Change and Organizational Development Manager. Cyndi holds a Ph.D. in Leadership and Change Management. In this workshop, participants will learn about:

  • Leadership concepts and frameworks, including emotional intelligence;
  • Effective communication skills;
  • Techniques for leading teams and motivating others.

Workshops will be held at the following locations:

  • Thursday, May 15, 2014, 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m., Hal Holmes Community Center, Ellensburg;
  • Thursday, May 29, 2014, 10:00 a.m. – 2:30 p.m., North Central Regional Library Distribution Center, Wenatchee;
  • Friday, June 6, 2014, 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m., Whatcom County Library Processing and Administrative Office, Bellingham;
  • Thursday, June 12, 2014, 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m., Washington Talking Book & Braille Library, Seattle.

This free workshop will include light refreshments and lunch for all attendees. For additional information and to register, go to sos.wa.gov/q/noauth.

2) CHANGE OF WSL LSTA GRANTS MANAGER

Allyson Ruppenthal, who was our LSTA Grants Manager, has left for a position in one of our sister divisions within the Office of the Secretary of State. Until further notice, please contact Jeff Martin, Library Development Program Manager, if:

  • You have an active LSTA grant from the Washington State Library;
  • You are in the process of applying for an LSTA grant;
  • You have a Continuing Education (CE or ITCE) grant.

If your normal contact is with another staff member of the Washington State Library or the Library Development program, please continue to use that contact. Note that we will not create amendments to your current grant agreements or contracts to formally change LSTA Grants Manager. Notification by e-mail will serve as your official notice of this change.

Please ensure that those associated with current LSTA grants and CE grants are aware of this change. We are striving to notify individuals associated with grants from the contracting authority to the fiscal agent to the project manager as listed on file. We will also notify certain lists of this change to more broadly inform those who were just getting used to Allyson as a contact.

Questions? Contact Jeff Martin at [email protected] or 360.704.5248.

3) NATIONAL DIGITAL STEWARDSHIP RESIDENCY PROGRAMS

The National Digital Stewardship Residency (NDSR) Programs in Boston and New York, with generous funding from the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS), have been working to develop the next generation of digital stewardship professionals by funding nine-month hands-on residencies for recent master’s degree recipients to complete digital stewardship projects at host institutions in the Boston and New York City area. Applications for residencies running from September 2014 through May 2015 are now being accepted.

Those chosen for the NDSR program will:

  • Participate in a nine-month paid residency at a Boston or New York City institution working on a specific digital stewardship project with a mentor and with full host institution support;
  • Attend advanced training, lectures, and events on digital stewardship conducted by digital preservation professionals and program staff;
  • Have access to mentoring and career development services through the program and through the involvement in NDSR of notable digital preservation professionals;
  • Have access to professional development funding, the opportunity to present at national conferences, and the chance to help contribute to and shape a national model for post-master’s residency programs.

For more information, go to:

Applications are due Friday, May 30, 2014.

4) SOCIALIZE WITH SOUTH SOUND LIBRARIANS

The South Sound Librarians are hosting an after-work social gathering on April 22. Snacks and drinks will be provided, and attendees are encouraged to bring food and/or drinks to share. There’s a pizza shop located next door in the Student Union for those wanting a more substantial dinner (options include vegan and gluten-free pizza).

Particulars:

  • When: Tuesday, April 22, 2014, 5:00 – 8:00 p.m. PDT;
  • RSVP: [email protected] by Monday, April 21.

The South Sound Librarians group was created to provide a forum for communication and sharing between library staff of all types in the South Sound. Learn about collections and services available at other libraries, and get to know colleagues you might not normally meet at more topic-specific groups. There are no membership fees. Any professional librarians or support staff at libraries located in Mason, Pierce, and Thurston counties are welcome. For more information about the group, including upcoming events, visit sos.wa.gov/q/SouthSound.

The workshop emphasizes working collaboratively with colleagues to develop and receive feedback on project proposals.
