New look at library proposal: city council to consider long-shelved expansion.
Bellingham is considering purchasing a site for a new central library building. Planning started more than a decade ago. The library 2015 budget proposal also calls for $51,000 to update the current library plan which does not take into account new technology needs. (Bellingham Herald, Bellingham, 07/08/14).

Public comment period opens for library site.
Residents of Central Kitsap will make their opinions known about where the new Silverdale Library should be built. Each of the three sites have pluses and minuses. The estimated cost for the new branch is $5.8 million. (Bremerton Patriot, Bremerton, July 18, 2014).

Kitsap Regional Library has unveiled details and costs about its latest site options for a new Silverdale branch. The building will be 10,000 square feet with at least 40 parking spots. (The Kitsap Sun, Bremerton, 07/11/14).

Library saved garden and back
When an Ocean Shores resident had difficulty making his dream of a cottage garden a reality in Ocean Shores he turned to the library. In his quest to outwit hungry deer he found, in his library shelves, a book. A book that would teach him the secret to conquering voracious, herb-icidal deer. A book that would teach him how to build a fence. This and other books found in his local library enabled him to make his dream garden a reality. (The North Coast News, Ocean Shores, 07/17/14).

Are Burien parks, library truly public if the public is afraid to use them?
A couple of years back, after-school behavior of some teens in downtown Burien got so bad, some residents said they were afraid to use the Burien library or visit the park. The City Attorney introduced a proposed ordinance establishing a process to issue trespass warnings on city property. Final approval is not expected until late August. Library benefits Food Bank, too.
The Ocean Shores Library donates gently used children’s books to the local Food Bank. The children of families visiting the Food Bank can read the books as the adults are taking care of Food Bank business and take the books home with them if they wish. (The North Coast, Ocean Shores, 07/17/14).

Making math fun for kids
The Burlington Public Library hosted a Science and Math Expo to introduce children to engineering. There were several bridge building and testing projects and catapults made of cans, rubber bands, pencils and spoons. (Skagit Argus, Burlington, 07/22/14).

Summer fun, program at local libraries.
East Lewis County libraries including Packwood Mountain View (Randle), and Salkum all took part in the district-wide summer reading program. The events included science experiments, crafts, prize events, and even an interactive mystery play. (The East County Journal, Morton, 07/09/14).

Robots to take over Forks Library.
The Forks Library presented “Can-Do Robots!”. Participants heard stories about robots and built their own Mr. Potato Head type robots. The event was in conjunction with the summer reading program, “Fizz, Boom, Read!”. (Peninsula Daily News, Port Angeles, 07/11/14).

Rolling Book Café brings books to youth.
The Snohomish Book Café, started by local teacher, Jenny Granger, is in its second year. The bookmobile stops at the same places where the Snohomish School District’s free summer meal program is offered. (Snohomish County Tribune, Snohomish, 07/09/147).
