1) FIRST TUESDAYS – READERSFIRST INITIATIVE
The e-book marketplace has been chaotic for libraries. ReadersFirst is an organization founded by librarians to advocate for the public to ensure users have the same open, easy and free access to e-books they have come to rely on with print books.
Recently the ReadersFirst Initiative has been joined by the Ohio Library Council’s Federal Ebook Project. At next week’s First Tuesdays presentation, The ReadersFirst Initiative: Fighting for Fair Access to ebooks, Spokane Public Library’s Support Services Manager, Robert Roose, will share what progress has been made by ReadersFirst.
Designed as a continuing education opportunity for staff of libraries in Washington State, this free web presentation, which will take place on September 9 2014, from 9:00 to 10:00 a.m. PDT, lets attendees share their skills and successes and learn about new topics. Sessions are recorded so that others may listen at their own convenience. For more information about First Tuesdays, visit sos.wa.gov/q/tuesdays. For instructions on joining the webinar, visit sos.wa.gov/q/FirstTuesdays.

3) LIBRARY COUNCIL OF WASHINGTON SEEKS NEW MEMBERS
The Library Council of Washington (LCW) is the conduit that enables local communities, both geographic and demographic, to advise the State Librarian and the Secretary of State in developing and implementing statewide library programs. It also provides a forum where the library community can discuss issues and work towards the shared goal of improving library services for all people in Washington by encouraging and supporting cooperation and collaboration.
The LCW is currently seeking four new members in the following categories:
- Special Libraries;
- Information Technology;
- Serving the Disadvantaged;
- Four-Year Academic Libraries.
If you would like to seize this unique opportunity to help shape the present and future of libraries in our state, please consider applying for one of these positions or encouraging a colleague to do so; your ideas and contributions are needed. To find out more about the vacancies and to apply, visit sos.wa.gov/q/vacancy. For more information about the LCW, go to sos.wa.gov/q/Council.
Don’t delay – applications are due by Monday, September 15, 2014. Questions? Contact Maura Walsh, [email protected], 360.704.5246.
