Libraries partner with Thrive by Five, focus on early learning
The Libraries of Stevens County has partnered with Thrive By Five Washington, the Washington State Department of Early Learning and the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction. Thrive By Five Washington has created a program called Love.Talk.Play, to help provide early education information and encourage positive connections between young children and their parents/caregivers. Carlson new library board member
Sonja Carlson has been appointed by the Board of County Commissioners to the Spokane County Library District’s board of trustees. Carlson will fill the remainder of a term due to the resignation of Daniel Davis, whose term expires Dec. 31. (Valley News Herald, Spokane, 10/24/14)

Grandview Library marks its centennial in 2014
In 2014, Grandview Library celebrated the 100th anniversary of its founding, which took place April 12, 1914, the date of the first meeting of the Library Board of Trustees. That birth date was commemorated April 15, with a party in the main area of the library, hosted by the Grandview Friends of the Library. That was the first of a number of other activities. MV library to offer telescope for checkout
Mount Vernon City Library patrons will soon be able to check out a telescope from the library, thanks to a donation by the Island County Astronomical Society. Society President Bob Scott donated an Orion Starblast 4.5–inch reflector telescope on behalf of the society to the library’s collection. The library will be the first in the state to offer a telescope for library card holders to check out. (Skagit Valley Herald, Mount Vernon, 11/2/14)

Poets Clem Starck and Charles Goodrich return to Stevenson Library
Award-winning poet/carpenter Clem Starck returns to Stevenson for a time honored evening of poetry recitation. Starck has been reading annually to an enthusiastic Stevenson following since the mid-1990s, when the tradition began. His engaging poetry draws on his life as a merchant seaman and journeyman carpenter among many other things. This year he will again be joined by his friend and fellow poet Charles Goodrich, who over the past six or seven years has acquired his own local following with his down-to-earth, often humorous poems. Morton: Library projects being reviewed by TRL, historical group
Pat Saldana, who was selected as chairman of the City’s Library committee reported the group has been meeting and hopes to determine soon if the Cowlitz River Valley Historical Society will be able to house the library at its Interpretive Center. According to Saldana, Historical Society members and city officials also need to agree to any rental terms at the building. (The East County Journal, Morton, 10/29/14)

Library remodel to move ahead
On Oct. 29, after a discussion about whether the Mercer Island Library remodel could be paused to allow for more time for community input, the Board of the King County Library System (KCLS) voted 3-2 to go ahead with the plans as they currently stand. Little Golden Books guru helps raise money for the library
An ardent supporter of the Grandview Library is using the biggest-selling children’s books of all time to help support her favorite institution. Gail Boose, long-time Grandview resident and member of the Grandview Friends of the Library, has taken advantage of the popularity of Little Golden Books to create a little gold mine to help fund library activities. Former school librarian new assistant principal at Chief Kamiakin
Yvette Jaramillo is not a new face in the Sunnyside School District. She started her career as a fourth grade teacher at Outlook Elementary School more than 20 years ago. Jaramillo, however, is the newest assistant principal at Chief Kamiakin Elementary School. Hired this past August, Jaramillo feels like she is home again. (Daily News, Sunnyside, 10/30/14)

La Hora Del Cuento
King County Libraries story time presenter Adriana Alvarez leads parents and children alike through a round of Spanish-language “Simon Says” during the Sammamish library’s World Language Story Time “Spanish Story times – Hola!” Monday, Sept. 22, at the Sammamish library. Multilingual story time sessions, geared towards toddlers and young children, are also available in Arabic, Chinese, Hindi and Russian. SARC Passes
The North Olympic Library System (NOLS) has partnered with the Sequim Aquatic Recreation Center (SARC) in Sequim to make available two free passes available for checkout beginning Monday. One pass is for individuals who’d like to try fitness classes offered at SARC. The second pass grants up to six household members access to workout, cardio, and weight rooms, in addition to open swim and family fun night. (Peninsula Daily News, Port Angeles, 11/2/14)

Support local food banks, “Food for Fines” at Mid-Columbia Libraries
A popular program helping customers pay overdue fees while helping the local community starts at Mid-Columbia Libraries. “Food for Fines” returns Nov. 1, inviting customers to pay their fines using non-perishable food items. Each food item counts as $1 toward overdue fines, up to $10 per account. All food will be donated to local food banks throughout the region through December 31. (Record-Bulletin, Prosser, 11/5/14)
