1) METADATA ENHANCEMENT & REMEDIATION GRANTS DEADLINE JUNE 10 

The Washington State Library (WSL) announces a new Metadata Enhancement & Remediation Pilot Project. We’re offering Metadata Enhancement & Remediation Grants to support public, academic, and tribal libraries in remediating, re-cataloging, and/or enhancing digital collection records currently available to the public through digital library and digital repository systems. The primary purpose of these grants is to help institutions prepare for the eventual harvest of collection metadata by a regional or state-level Digital Public Library of America (DPLA) service hub.

Overall funding to support this grant cycle is $25,000. This grant cycle has a limit of $5,000 per application. We anticipate that five (5) or more applicants may receive awards. Awards are contingent upon receipt of federal funds and distribution of those funds by WSL, a division of the Office of the Secretary of State.

2) ARSL SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATION DEADLINE JULY 1

The Washington State Library (WSL), with funding from the Institute for Museum and Library Services (IMLS) through the Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA), is providing two scholarships to attend the 2016 Association of Rural and Small Libraries (ARSL) conference from October 27-29, 2016 in Fargo, North Dakota.

The ARSL conference is specifically for rural library staff. Previous conference topics have included building community advocacy; effective trustee recruitment; inexpensive programming ideas; innovative web services with few resources; virtual networking; and many more.

Scholarships will include transportation, all conference fees, and lodging. WSL will reimburse other allowable costs at the state per diem rate. Preference will be given to applicants who have not won this scholarship before.

  • Applicants must be from a public or tribal library or library branch serving a population of 10,000 or fewer in Washington State.
  • Scholarship awardees must commit to a doing follow-up project.
  • The deadline for applications, both the paper copy and the digital copy is July 1, 2016. Paper copies may be hand-delivered or postmarked by July 1, 2016.

3) PNR HOSTS TWO FREE WEBINARS

The Pacific Northwest Region (PNR) of the National Network of Libraries of Medicine (NN/LM) is hosting two webinars:

PNR Partners – Tuesday, June 14, 2016 at 1:00 p.m. PDT

  • Robin Champieux, Scholarly Communications Librarian at Oregon Health & Science University Library, will describe the Open Insight program which encourages the adoption of open science practices and activities. Meg Brunner, staff librarian at the University of Washington’s Alcohol & Drug Abuse Institute, will present an online toolkit of resources created to increase outreach and education for Washington communities needing reliable substance abuse information. 4) FREE GPO WEBINARS

Check out these free webinars from the U.S. Government Publishing Office (GPO).

Presenters from GPO, other Federal Government agencies, and Federal depository libraries across the nation will discuss topics related to Federal Government information and the Federal Depository Library Program. All sessions are presented virtually through GPO’s FDLP Academy.

Attendees will receive a Certificate of Participation from GPO for each webinar. Closed captioning is available for all webinars. Registrants will be sent access information upon registering.

5) WHO’LL COUNT THE RAIN?

Into every life, a little rain must fall – but how much? Will there be more on you than me?

The Community Collaborative Rain, Hail and Snow Network (CoCoRaHS) is a non-profit, community based, high density network of volunteers who take daily measurements of rain, hail, and snow. Contributing to the CoCoRaHS network is an excellent STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) activity for classes, libraries, or individuals.

  • Volunteers are trained to take precipitation measurements and post their observations on the CoCoRaHS website.
  • Observations are immediately available on maps and reports for the public to view.
  • Volunteers provide useful information to scientists, farmers, and other researchers on local precipitation patterns.
