1) NEW WASHINGTON DIGITAL NEWSPAPERS WEBSITE

“Extra, extra – read all about it!” Washington Digital Newspapers at the Washington State Library has a new website! And it’s mobile friendly!

New features include:

• “One hundred years ago…” front pages from Washington newspapers
• Links to WSL’s microfilm collections for a full list of titles, publication histories, and essays about the newspapers’ influence on their communities
• Browse newspapers by title, calendar date, or full text searching
• Search on the go using your smartphone or tablet

We are beginning to merge Washington State Library’s Historic Washington Newspapers Online collection with the titles digitized for the National Digital Newspaper Program for full text searching of all digitized titles. The newest titles digitized for Washington Digital Newspapers will be found exclusively at this new website.

Watch for over 50,000 digitized pages to be added to this new website by the end of 2016.

Check out the Tacoma Evening Telegraph now and soon we’ll have:

• The Eatonville Dispatch
• Dankse Kronike (Danish/English)
• Dat Moi (Vietnamese/English)
• Centralia Daily Hub
•  Anacortes American

2) Accepting Applications for Microsoft Imagine Academy 2016-2017 Grants

Applications are being accepted to fund Microsoft Imagine Academy projects for coding programs and Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS) certification. Eligible libraries may apply for up to $4,500 per library system for equipment purchased by the State Library, and/or the funds to purchase equipment of the applicant library’s choice. Funding for materials, promotional activities, and other activities which support project goals also may be requested.

First review of applications will begin on Tuesday, August 2, 2016; applications received after August 2 will be reviewed and awarded on a funds-available basis as they are received.

3) DISASTER RESPONSE & RECOVERY: PUBLIC LIBRARIES AS KEY COMMUNITY PARTNERS

Disaster Response and Recovery: Public libraries as Key Community Partners is a free First Tuesdays webinar hosted by Washington State Library.

Phil Heikkinen, Orcas Island Public Library Director, will address how libraries can develop plans for responding to disasters and emergencies. Libraries can play crucial roles in helping their communities prepare for and respond to a disaster or emergency through building community resilience, sharing information, facilitating networking, providing shelter, and contributing to staffing of an emergency operations center.

•  This webinar will take place on Tuesday, August 2, 2016 from 9:00 – 10:00 a.m. PDT.

First Tuesdays is designed as a continuing-education opportunity for staff of libraries in Washington State. This free webinar allows attendees to share their skills and successes and learn about new topics. The special-subject presentations, lasting about 60 minutes, are recorded so others may listen at their convenience.

4) WASHINGTON PUBLIC LIBRARY TRUSTEE TRAINING WORKSHOPS

All Washington public library trustees and library directors are invited to trustee training workshops sponsored by the Washington State Library. These workshops will delve into the roles of trustees and the board’s relationship with the library director. Attendees will be more informed and confident about their working relationships, communicating with each other and their library director.

Ruth Metz of Ruth Metz Associates will be the workshop trainer. Ruth has extensive experience working with libraries on leadership and organizational development.

Public library advisory board members are welcome, but the program is geared for governing boards.

Dates and places:

• Tuesday, August 16 – Ramada at Spokane Airport, Spokane
• Thursday, August 18 – Hampton Inn, Richland

For the August workshops, registration deadline is Wednesday, August 3, 2016.

• Tuesday, September 20 – location to be determined, Everett
• Thursday, September 22 – location to be determined, Kelso

For the September workshops, registration deadline is Wednesday, September 7, 2016.

• Roles of trustees & working together as a board – 9:30 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. with a break

B. Lunch & Networking – 12:00 – 1:00 p.m. Lunch provided by the Washington State Library. Please note, to sign up for lunch, you must attend either the morning or afternoon session or both.

C. Afternoon session – 1:00 – 4:00 p.m. with a break

5) THE UNCONFERENCE RETURNS

University of Washington Libraries, in collaboration with the Associated Librarians of the University of Washington (ALUW) and Brooks Library, Central Washington University, is pleased to announce the annual Connections: Libraries Unconference @ UW.

• Odegaard Library, University of Washington Seattle campus

The Unconference is a fun, free gathering where librarians from different institutions can engage with and learn from one another. Inspired by the many great connections that have been made at past Unconferences, “Connections” will be the unifying theme of this year’s event: connecting to students, connecting to faculty, connecting to curriculum, connecting to community, and of course, connecting with each other.

This year, the Unconference debuts lightning talks, which are a fun, fast way to share ideas and best practices. Topics will be practical or conceptual ideas, and should showcase effective practices or highlight new projects in various stages of development.
