Library News
The Point Roberts Library, a part of the Whatcom County Library System, will have extended hours this summer to accommodate more users during summer months. In addition, the summer reading program will run to August 30 and the theme for kids is “Dig into Reading”. (All Point Bulletin [Point Roberts], 6.13)

Pamela Timmons, an Issaquah resident, said technology has made her library trips quick and easy. Basic things like the self-checkout and free Wi-Fi in all library branches are just the beginning for libraries in the King County Library System, which is increasingly finding new ways to use technology. The Walla Walla County Rural Library District has expanded its services on the web. Now members can download books, magazines, songs, job-finding and educational material right onto their electronic devices around the clock. Library News
At the last regular school board meeting the Board addressed the issue of two books challenged by Rich Korb, an educator. The Prosser School Board reached an impasse in removing The Popularity Papers from school libraries, meaning the recommendation of the committee will keep the book in place. A Child Called It will remain on the library shelf until the Board can come to consensus and make a decision. (Photo) (Record-Bulletin [Prosser], 5.15.13)

Elections
Toledo is moving forward on the vision of establishing a new library in the city. The Toledo City Council unanimously approved the first reading of an ordinance to allow the city to join the taxing district of the Timberland Regional Library System on the November ballot. Buildings
The North Olympic Library System Board of Directors said yes. During their meeting on May 9th, the board approved a $537,517 contract for Hoch Construction, Inc. of Port Angeles. That means the beloved Forks Library will be seriously spiffed up, with a nine-month renovation to begin soon. (Forks Forum, 5.16.13)

Library News
The Centralia Timberland library hosted an open house with various activities and entertainment Saturday, May 18th to celebrate the library’s centennial. Funded by philanthropist Andrew Carnegie, Centralia citizens and the Ladies of the Round Table, the library’s doors opened to the public in March 1913. (The Chronicle [Centralia], 5.14.13)

Buildings
La Conner residents got a preview of the community’s new library in May when the architect’s drawing was unveiled at a public meeting. Plans drawn up by the Miller Hull architectural firm of Seattle call for a 5,000-square-foot building. After residents have a chance to see and comment on the new library’s plans, the board will obtain a cost estimate for the project. (La Conner Weekly News, 5.15.13)

Library News
Fresh on the heels of ensuring a new city library will go forward this year and ensuring its completion in some form, the New Ferndale Library Project now has yet another matching grant of $500,000 from an anonymous donor. (Ferndale Record, 5.8.13)

The primary classes at Garfield Elementary topped the annual library penny drive by raising $186.86 in April. Donations from the school and branch totaled $193.50. Garfield Library has received $400 in children’s books as part of a 2 to 1 matching grant from the Libri Foundation. (Whitman County Gazette [Colfax], 5.9.13)

The inboxes of the North Bend City Council and staff members and police had been filling up with complaints about things going on at the North Bend Library, but Police Chief Mark Toner said the library has followed through with its promise to make some changes and he’s hearing very few complaints from the public these days. Star Wars Stormtroopers, balloon animals, music and a stilt walker were just a few of the many things that happened on Saturday, May 11th at the Camas Public Library. The event was to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the opening of the newly remodeled and expanded library. One book challenged by a social studies teacher will remain in school libraries, but the fate of another is not yet entirely decided. The Prosser School Board deadlocked on a vote to remove The Popularity Papers from some of its school libraries. That means a recommendation approved by Superintendent Ray Tolcacher to keep the book remains in place. The Spokane Public Library board of trustees voted to open three outlying branches eight hours a day, five days a week. The decision follows the February special election, when voters passed a four-year property tax levy enabling the Eastside, Hillyard and Indian Trail locations to increase operations to 40 hours a week. The Fall City Elementary School Library was packed with students and adults, and a nervous tension was in the air. Students were competing in the final Battle of the Books, the culmination of a contest that has been running since December. “I love the enthusiasm for reading that happens with the Battle of the Books,” Meg Handy, librarian at Fall City Elementary, said. A Snohomish man has been arrested for investigation of downloading child pornography from a city library computer onto a cellphone. The suspect, 55, is being held on $100,000 bail. No charges have yet been filed. All computers in the Sno-Isle Libraries system have Internet filters, but library users 17 and older can choose an option to have unfiltered Internet access. Bothell Police are currently investigating two reported incidents of voyeurism that occurred at the King County Library’s Bothell branch. In both cases, library staff and witnesses saw a male suspect entering the women’s restroom and taking significant steps to view and/or record females using the toilets. In the Barge-Chestnut neighborhood, Mary MacKintosh has established Yakima’s first registered Little Free Library in her front yard. There’s also a Little Free Library at the Unity Spiritual Life Center to promote literacy and a sense of community. Whether it’s more than 140 people signing up for ID cards or city budgets remaining in line, Roy’s quarterly reports were, once again, positive. Library Director Cecelia Hanson said she spent a little more than $7,000 (35 percent) of the Roy City Library’s $20,199 budget, including $350 on library supplies. Renton is still part of the King County Library System – for now. After a 90-minute Committee of the Whole discussion and nine comments from the public, the Renton City Council essentially rejected a de-annexation vote, but due to procedural issues, the council chose to pull it from the agenda rather than vote it down. If you can get to one of the area libraries, you can get online for free, with a broadband connection. All four libraries in Pend Oreille County – in Ione, Metaline Falls, Cusick and Newport – offer free Internet for their patrons, as well as technical help if you need it. Washington State Library News
For people nostalgic for newspapers of bygone eras, a number of Washington newspapers past have been digitized by the National Digital Newspaper Program and can be searched and viewed on the Library of Congress’ Chronicling America website [http://chroniclingamerica.loc.gov/]. The Washington State Library is helping the project by digitizing another 100,000 pages for the last phase of the project. Library News
The Tonasket Library Board held their annual volunteer appreciation luncheon in March. The invitations go to those volunteers who help with the twice yearly book sales put on by the Tonasket Library Board.
