Timberland Libraries boost service hours.
Library patrons in the five-county Timberland Regional Library (TRL) service area asked for longer hours: as of September 2, they’ve got them! District-wide, 26 libraries and the Ask-A-Librarian service added hours – a total of 58 more each week. The increased scheduled comes at no additional cost. SCLD launches business card: New card provides businesses with access to digital resources.
Born out of a desire to help local businesses prosper, grow or begin, the Spokane County Library District (SCLD) is launching a new card designed just for business users. (The Current, Liberty Lake, 09/00/14).

Rural library district creates ‘digital petting zoo’ with grant: Tour of items planned for this fall.
The Libraries of Stevens County was one of 12 libraries awarded a grant this summer to support digital literacy efforts in Washington State. The grant cycle provided funding for digital literacy projects which focused on giving patrons the ability to perform business transactions in a digital environment, using technology to retrieve information and helping patrons to develop skills to enhance their employability by using email and online job searches. New checkout for library (Spokesman Review, 08/21/14).

Timberland extending hours: District wide, 58 open hours added each week.
Library patrons in the five-county Timberland Regional Library (TRL) service area asked for longer hours. And according to TRL officials, starting September 2, they will have them. District wide, 26 libraries and the Ask-A-Librarian service will add hours- a total of 58 more each week. The increased schedules come at no additional cost. Officials to advise assessor on property tax shift: Commissioners will make recommendations at Tuesday meeting (Skagit Valley Herald, Mount Vernon, 05/09/14).

Bellingham library open Sundays beginning Sept 7.
The central branch of Bellingham Public Library will reopen on Sundays staring Sept. 7. The library at 210 Central Ave will open 1 to 5 pm on Sundays because the Bellingham City Council included money in the 2014 budget, which was adopted in December, to restore the hours. Mill A unveils Little Free Library
The Columbia Gorge community of Mill A is now one of many that boasts a Little Free Library. It joins more than 15,000 Little Free Libraries across all 50 states and in 40 countries in the world. Funds to support the project were raised through a club sponsored plant and bake sale. (The Skamania County Pioneer, Stevenson, 07/23/14).

In anticipation of the Ferndale Library’s upcoming move to its new building, staff plan to hold a “Great Checkout” event. The idea is for patrons to “help” with the move by checking out materials at the current location and returning them to the new location. (Ferndale Record, Ferndale, 07/30/14).

The Online Visioning Survey created to establish the direction of the Mount Vernon City Library closed on June 30. As of June 10, 222 surveys had been completed. (Skagit Argus, Burlington, 06/24/14).

Burlington Library has book kits available for checkout for two months at a time. The book kits are available for book clubs and discussion groups. (Skagit Argus, Burlington, 06/24/14).

Timberland Regional Library offers patrons unlimited free access to about 100 popular magazines. Cardholders can read the latest issues on their PC or Mac computers and most tablets and mobile devices. The startup collection includes a wide variety of magazines. The e-magazines are full-text and full-color and some provide additional content such as video, audio, and web links. (Chinook Observer, Long Beach, 06/18/14).

The North Central Regional Library System’s one and only bookmobile has been on the move. The mobile library has more than 3, 000 volumes and has been bringing the library experience to rural areas that don’t have their own libraries. (The Wenatchee World, Wenatchee, 07/11/14).

The University of Washington Libraries Special Collections has created a documentary from 35mm film discovered in an abandoned Seattle storage locker. The film, circa 1920’s, depicts the everyday happenings of people in Grays Harbor County. Created by Nicollete Bromberg, visual materials curator and Hannah Palin, film archive specialist, the 28 minute documentary, Grays Harbor Happenings, has garnered several awards and can be viewed on YouTube. Seattle’s International District is home to the Eastern Café. In addition to food, coffee, and people there is a library. This library is the API Flying Bookshelf, a traveling library specializing in the works of Asian and Pacific Islander writers, artists, and scholars. Everything is based on the honor system and people may take a book and return it when they are done- no fines, no due dates. The API Flying Bookshelf covers a wide range of genres and issues and the plan is to “fly” it to different cafes throughout Seattle. The Morton City Council plans to discuss plans to put a Timberland Regional Library at the Morton Junior High School. Last fall, TRL officials in cooperation with Central College East (CC East) installed a library kiosk at the CC East campus for patrons. (The East County Journal, Morton, 06/18/14).

The Silverdale Library is benefiting from the attention of the Kitsap County Rose Society. The Rose Society has been tending the roses outside of the Silverdale Library since 1999. Two to three hours a week volunteers tent the 17 bushes that make up the garden. Each rose has been donated by the society and on clean-up day the volunteers cut a bouquet to bring in to the library staff. Port Angeles Library will offer free online tech courses. The North Olympic Library System will offer introductory classes that cover everything from sending and receiving email to navigating the web. More advanced users will benefit from the Microsoft Online Academy. Completion certificates are free and testing with official Microsoft Certification is available for a fee.
