1) SELF-TALK AND EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE

Work that is focused on public service can be both rewarding and costly. Being mindful of our own work narrative and understanding how we deal with conflict are two key areas that require our attention. The Washington State Library presents Self-Talk and Emotional Intelligence: Improving your Work Narrative. Participants in this 3-hour workshop will learn how to:

  • Identify and adjust their self-talk;
  • Understand their personal work mission;
  • Develop awareness of cycles of conflict; and
  • Improve clarity and effectiveness of communication.

This free workshop will be presented on several dates and at multiple locations around the state beginning January 30 at Fort Vancouver Regional Library. For more information and to register, visit sos.wa.gov/q/EI.

2) SCREEN SCENE FOR CHILDREN

Screens are everywhere! Young children are spending more and more time engaged with screen media. Learn what and when children might be learning from screens as well as how we can support children’s media activities. The State Library presents Screen Scene: Best Practices for Using Screen Media with Young Children, a workshop that will explore important cognitive advances children make during the first years of life that impact their ability to learn from screens. The workshop will also discuss the many practical applications and resources for parents and educators, and ways to make the most of ever-present media technology.

Learning Objectives: Upon completion of the training, participants will be able to:

  • Summarize research-based understandings of the impact of digital engagement on early learning;
  • Apply an understanding of joint media engagement to their regular interactions with children in a library setting;
  • Develop appropriate models of digital engagement for very young children.

Register at sos.wa.gov/q/screen. The following sessions are available:

  • Tuesday, February 6 (a.m. session) Fort Vancouver Regional Library Headquarters

Cultural Icons of Puget Sound TV Childrens Shows

Wednesday, August 1st, 2012 Posted in Articles, Institutional Library Services | Comments Off on Cultural Icons of Puget Sound TV Childrens Shows

JP Patches Statue 7/31/12

The recent death of local cultural icon J. P. Patches has reminded me of other children’s TV shows I watched devotedly in the 1960s.  Shari Lewis, Stan Boreson, Brakeman Bill, Captain Puget and Wunda Wunda were all entertaining and educational.

Wunda Wunda was the persona of Ruth Prins who was hired by Seattle’s KING-TV.  She wore a harlequin’s clown outfit (adorable) and told a story on every episode.  Back in the day, my mother was too busy with siblings and housework to take me to the local library.  But I had Wunda Wunda who told stories and showed illustrations on-the-air.  Later, we moved closer to a public library, and I knew all about libraries thanks to Wunda Wunda.

And Shari Lewis was much more than a puppeteer.  She wrote several books. I discovered them in the 1980s while I scoured the library shelves for cub scout activities.

Books that were read on these shows provided great reading fun for the children who watched them, many of them rushing to their local libraries to find the books.  History of Ruth Prin and her influence on the reading habits of young children can be found here http://www.historylink.org/index.cfm?DisplayPage=output.cfm&file_id=9355.

Books and material on these wonderful shows can still be found in libraries today, including my own library here at WSH where some of Stan Boreson’s and Shari Lewis’s material can be found on the shelf. The Washington State Library also carries a DVD, J.P. Patches Show and book J.P. Patches, Northwest Icon by Chris Wedes.  Many people remember their childhood shows and the books that were read on them.

Reading for Others

Monday, October 5th, 2009 Posted in Articles, Institutional Library Services | Comments Off on Reading for Others

Reading

Reading

Reading takes on a new meaning for some inmates as they try to keep in touch with their children. Many of the inmates will try to read the same books that their children are reading at home. Currently one father is reading the Monster Manor series by Paul Martin, trying to stay one book ahead of his daughter. Not only does it give him something to talk about with his daughter, but the experience is even more valuable. By showing an interest in something his daughter enjoys and being able to discuss it with her, shows a great amount of respect for her. This will help him build a lasting relationship even while incarcerated. Reading is a joy, but sometimes reading for others provides so much more.

The following is a comment made by an inmate at the Washington Corrections Center for Women:

“I am 40 years old and I have read more in the 2 months I have been here @ WCCW than I have my entire life I tell my Daughter the Books I check out and she goes and checks out the same book and we read the Book together and talk about it. the Library not only helps me but it is Helping my Daughter with her reading ability this is something we plan to continue even after my release Thank you you are all a wonderful treasure. My Daughter is only 12 but is now reading at Adult level.”
