1) LIFE AFTER GETTING AN MLIS

November’s First Tuesdays program features Life After Getting an MLIS, a panel discussion facilitated by Adrienne Doman Calkins from the Sherwood Public Library in Oregon. New(ish) librarians share their post-MLIS reflections: career-advancing strategies that work (or don’t), classes that proved most helpful (or not) post-graduation, advice worth passing on to current MLIS students, and staying informed about emerging trends and technologies.

This free First Tuesdays webinar will take place November 4, 2014 from 9:00 – 10:00 a.m. PST. Instructions for joining the webinar are at sos.wa.gov/q/FirstTuesdays. First Tuesdays are a continuing education opportunity presented by Washington State Library.

2) ONECLICK + ZINIO RENEWAL OPTIONS

This information is for public and academic libraries participating in the OneClickdigital contract with Recorded Books through the State Library. To offset the end of LSTA subsidies these libraries have been receiving, Recorded Books is offering significant renewal discounts for the coming year. These libraries have a choice between options that bundle Zinio, the popular magazine reading platform, with OneClickdigital at no additional base cost or that maintain current library costs even without the subsidy.

The renewal date is in April of each year for most participants but, for some libraries or schools, the renewal comes at other times. Because many libraries are currently planning their 2015 budgets, this notice is provided now.

2) NEW DOWNLOADABLE CONTENT

The “Off the Page: Downloadable Audiobooks and eBooks for Washington” project is pleased to announce the addition of significant new content to both vendor offerings.

Recent additions to the Recorded Books OneClickdigital audiobook collection include:

• Nine Modern Scholar titles (unlimited use), added to the 23 already available;
• Almost 350 Pimsleur Method language programs, with at least 1 copy of every available Pimsleur language course, including all of the various ESL courses, and up to 5 copies of popular languages;
• Over 350 single-use adult audiobook titles in all genres: both popular fiction and nonfiction, including romance, mystery, Sci Fi, suspense, history, business, self-help, etc.;
• Over 300 single-use children’s and young adult audiobook titles in similar genres: fiction, fantasy, mystery, biography, etc.

Recent additions to the Washington Anytime Library (powered by OverDrive) include:

• 1,945 single-use eBooks, of which 105 are added copies of existing titles;
• 627 single-use audiobooks, of which 28 are added copies.

Carnegie-Whitney Grants provide support for the preparation of popular or scholarly reading lists, webliographies, indexes, and other guides to library resources that can benefit users of all types of libraries in the United States. Grants of up to $5,000 are intended to cover the cost of preparation, including research, but not the costs of final printing or online distribution of the product. Grants are awarded to individuals, as well as libraries, library organizations, and programs of information and library studies/science. International applicants are also welcome to apply.

Sue Polanka of No Shelf Required interviews Ebsco’s Senior Director of Sales for eBooks and eAudiobooks for NetLibrary, Scott Wasinger. The interview cover changes to NetLibrary and how it will integrate into the Ebsco interface.

“Scott and I discussed how EBSCO is implementing the NetLibrary content into the existing EBSCOhost interface, what changes we can expect to see with the Netlibrary interface, new plans for business models, and how the input from librarians is helping them to shape the future of NetLibrary.”

Evidently neither OCLC nor EBSCO have any problems with secrets leaking out from their companies, because this comes as a huge shock (and us just getting our big statewide NetLibrary thing going)! Basically it looks as though OCLC is moving away from owning/reselling content, and instead focusing more on providing access to other people’s content (a good move, I think).

Library Journal has a good paragraph regarding OCLC’s position in this:

“It’s a strategic repositioning from hosting and reselling content to building WorldCat out as a platform that libraries can use to manage and provide access to their entire collection,” including ebooks and articles, said OCLC VP Chip Nilges in an interview with LJ. It’s also “part of a broader effort to “provide comprehensive coverage” of ebooks in WorldCat,” said Nilges. “We have an agreement with Google Book Search to link to books in WorldCat; we have a similar agreement with Hathi Trust. We’re in hot pursuit of many different providers.”

EBSCO, meanwhile, has furthered their attempt at domination of the content market, also buying 15 vendor-owned databases that were once a part of FirstSearch.
