1) BROADBAND STIMULUS AND WASHINGTON LIBRARIES
State Librarian, Jan Walsh, spoke on behalf of Washington’s libraries at a hearing on broadband stimulus funding on Monday, April 20. The purpose of the hearing was to provide input to Governor Gregoire on the best use of federal stimulus funding designated for broadband purposes. Walsh noted, “The ‘broadband stimulus funding’ provides an unparalleled opportunity to increase broadband access for `unserved’ and `underserved’ communities across Washington. Public libraries exist throughout Washington. They serve, without charge, all segments of society including those who are less-educated, those with lower-incomes, minorities, older adults, and the unemployed.”
Asked to identify 3 priorities for the use of these funds, Walsh stated: “Fiber to the libraries; infrastructure both external to libraries and internal within the buildings; and provision of public access computing (public computing centers) including wireless access anywhere in the library building and the immediate surrounding area.”

2) HELP BUILD A HARD TIMES RESOURCE PORTAL
At WSL, we’ve been working on developing library resources for hard times, but we’d like to do more, and we think you can help. Join our Hard Times Resources team and help us develop a resource portal to serve Washington libraries and their users during these tough times and well into the future. Resources will be compiled first onto a collaborative wiki and, once ready, we will develop a portal to house them and provide access.

3) PRESERVATION WORKSHOP MAY 11 AT GONZAGA
“Swaddling your Problem Children,” a free lecture on preservation storage, environmental monitoring, and exhibition techniques for bound materials, will be followed by a hands-on workshop with training on the construction of wrappers and exhibition cradles. Due to space and time constraints, the workshop will be limited to 20 persons, with a limit of 2 per library. Lecture attendance is unlimited. The lecture begins at 9:00 a.m. and the workshop at 11:00 a.m.
The event will take place on May 11, 2009, at the Teleconference Center within the Foley Center Library at Gonzaga University in Spokane. It is funded by an LSTA Preservation Grant from WSL. For more information about the workshop and registration, contact Stephanie Plowman, [email protected].

4) GRANT SOURCES FOUND VIA GRANTSTATION
The Best Buy Children’s Foundation Community Grants Program provides support to local nonprofit organizations that work to build social, academic, leadership, and/or life skills in early adolescents (primarily ages 13-18). Grant amounts average $5,000 to $7,000, and do not exceed $10,000. Eligible organizations must be located within 50 miles of a Best Buy store or distribution center. Requests may be submitted between May 15 and June 15, 2009. Visit www.secstate.wa.gov/quicklinks/bestbuy for details and to apply.
The Paul G. Allen Family Foundation, www.pgafamilyfoundation.org, provides funds for Pacific Northwest arts organizations and libraries. Through the Community Development and Social Change Program, the Foundation supports projects that help public libraries engage and serve diverse populations and growing communities. 5) A JOB-SEARCH IDEA FROM KCLS
For a week, May 1 to May 8, King County Library System branches will be opening an hour early, and using the first two hours of each day for staff to host how-to demonstrations of the latest job-search and financial tools available at the library. 6) FREE MAYDAY DISASTER RESPONSE WORKSHOP IN PORTLAND
For those near southwest Washington, the Portland Area Disaster Response Group (DIRG) and the Oregon Library Association Preservation Roundtable are sponsoring a free MayDay! Disaster Response Workshop on Friday, May 1, from 10:00 a.m. to noon. The event will be held at Portland State University in the Millar Library, Room 160, (1875 SW Park Avenue, downtown Portland). 7) HIGHLINE OFFERS BASIC BOOK REPAIR CLASS THIS SUMMER
Highline Community College will offer a basic book repair class this summer, taught by Bernadette Jeffers for a fee of $227 plus lab fee. The class will be held on Saturdays, June 27 to August 8, minus the 4th of July weekend, and will be worth 3 credit hours. Register by May 29.
