1) ASK-WA LAUNCHES SMART PHONE APP
The Washington State Library is pleased to announce its first smart phone app, highlighting the statewide virtual reference service, Ask-WA. WSL’s Ask-WA app for Android and iDevices leverages the functionality found at ask.wa.gov and puts it on your smart phone. Ask-WA provides access to a live librarian, 24-hours-a-day, 7-days-a-week, to every resident of Washington State, providing useful answers to questions, based on credible sources, from the best information experts around.
While this app connects users to their local libraries, it also allows them to chat with the reference staff at the Washington State Library. This is the first app of its kind in terms of mobile-izing an entire statewide virtual reference service. Please feel free to spread the word, and check out the app via these shortcut links:

2) FULL SCHOLARSHIPS FOR DENVER LIBRARY CONFERENCE
Three competitive scholarships for the joint conference of the American Rural and Small Libraries (ARSL) and Association of Bookmobile and Outreach Services (ABOS) are being offered by the Washington State Library. The application deadline has been extended to Monday, August 23.
The conference is October 14 through 16 in Denver. Applicants must be first-time attendees for both conferences. These full scholarships will include air transportation, all conference fees, and will cover full per diem (hotel, meals, etc.). This conference is also eligible for CE grants from the Washington State Library, with applications due 30 days before the event. CE grants can pay up to 75% of eligible expenses.

3) TRANSFORMING LIFE AFTER 50
Nineteen librarians across Washington have been selected as Fellows in a new program that aims to serve middle-age patrons, the Washington State Library has announced. The program, called “Transforming Life After 50,” is funded by a grant from the Institute for Museum and Library Services (IMLS), Laura Bush 21st Century Librarian Program.
Led by a partnership among the state libraries of Washington, California, Idaho and Oregon, the Fellowship will introduce 93 selected public library professionals from 11 states to a new framework for serving and engaging midlife adults, ages 50 and above. The Fellowship will re-examine traditional views on aging and explore innovative ways in which public libraries can become centers of productive aging, lifelong learning, and civic engagement. The Fellowship began July 1 and runs through June 30, 2011.

4) ACTIVATE YOUR LYRASIS MEMBERSHIP NOW
This is a reminder to Washington libraries to activate your library’s LYRASIS membership for the 2010-2011 fiscal year (ending June 30, 2011) if you haven’t done so. Use the following shortcut link to visit the LYRASIS website and fill out a brief form: www.sos.wa.gov/quicklinks/enrich.
The Washington State Library has purchased a one year membership to LYRASIS for every Washington library. There is no cost or obligation for you. Joining LYRASIS in 2010-2011 will give you and your staff the opportunity to learn about the advantages of a LYRASIS membership for your library.
