1) LEGISLATIVE DISTRICT FACT SHEETS RELEASED

Given the current revenue situation for the state, the Washington State Library (WSL) has speeded up production of our informational legislative district fact sheets. These fact sheets are available for use by libraries statewide, and provide information on how the State Library has directly benefited libraries and their patrons.

The fact sheets utilize a somewhat longer format this year. Not only are additional projects such as Downloadable Audiobooks showcased, a section on return in investment in WSL has been added. The return on investment section notes that $1.00 invested in WSL state funding, and counted as maintenance of effort, returns $1.94 in federal library funding.

WSL’s partnership with libraries across the state and with NoaNet, our public utility district broadband partner, has returned over $138,800,000 in federal broadband grants to Washington. WSL’s efforts in working closely with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation has resulted in over $2,000,000 in funding for use as broadband match, and for use with the Renew Washington program.

The WSL 2010 legislative district fact sheets are available in PDF format at www.sos.wa.gov/quicklinks/factsheets.

2) MISSING NEWSPAPER ISSUES

The Washington State Library (WSL) is preparing some Washington newspapers for microfilming. This is part of WSL’s legal mandate to serve as a depository for the state’s newspapers. Unfortunately, two issues of one paper are missing. The newspaper has already bound the issues and will not allow us to unbind them for filming, so we are reaching out to subscribers of this list in the hopes that one of your libraries has them.

The missing issues are August 6, 2008 and October 22, 2008 from the South Whidbey Record. Please contact Leslie Boyter at [email protected] or 360-704-5220 by December 6 if your library can supply the missing issues.

3) STEPHEN ABRAMS – LIBRARIES AT THE TIPPING POINT

A well respected library futurist, Stephen Abrams, details the challenges that confront libraries in the near term. Abrams believes that 2010 may well be a “tipping point” year for libraries. In this presentation he discusses the challenges that confront libraries-but then tells how libraries can turn them into opportunities.

This provocative hour-long presentation works well for library friends and trustees as well as library staff because Abrams explains the challenges in a clear, concise, and intriguing fashion. Abrams turns the listener towards new 21st century strategies which need to be different as the needs of our library end users are changing.

Monday, December 6 at 10:00 a.m. PST, and repeated at 7:00 p.m. PST. Sponsored by the Washington Library Friends, Foundation, Trustees and Advocates (WLFFTA) WLA interest group. Please join the webinar by following this shortcut link: www.sos.wa.gov/quicklinks/tippingpoint.

4) LAURA BUSH GRANT PROVIDES BOOKS FOR K-12 LIBRARIES

In order to promote a love of reading, the goal of the Laura Bush Foundation for America’s Libraries is to provide print books to the K-12 school libraries and students that need them the most. Grants of up to $6,000 are available to update, extend, and diversify the book collections of school libraries throughout the United States. Only schools where a minimum of 50% of the student body qualifies for the federal Free or Reduced Lunch Program are eligible to apply. All grants are made to individual schools rather than to school districts, foundations, or other entities.

The application deadline is December 31, 2010. Only one application per school is allowed per year. Online application information is available on the Foundation’s website at www.laurabushfoundation.org/web2/.

5) GETTING READY IN INDIAN COUNTRY

Heritage Preservation has just announced a new initiative that is designed to advance emergency preparedness specifically for the care and protection of tribal heritage. The initiative consists of three parts:

  1. A Report that provides an overview of concerns, as well as recommendations, to better protect tribal cultural heritage from disasters,
  2. An online Inventory of Disaster Resources for Cultural Heritage, and
  3. Preparedness Discussion Questions that can be used to spark discussions at tribal gatherings, workshops, or staff meetings.

The primary audiences for Getting Ready in Indian Country are Native Americans who are the stewards of their community’s heritage, and the non-native cultural community, public safety officials, and agencies that provide services and funding for tribal projects.
