1) COMMENTS SOUGHT ON EARLY LEARNING GUIDELINES

The Washington State Early Learning Guidelines (formerly known as the “Benchmarks”) are currently being redesigned so that they are up-to-date, culturally relevant for Washington’s increasingly diverse population, and provide important linkages to the K-12 system.

Multiple rounds of outreach are being conducted as the Guidelines are developed to ensure a process that is truly inclusive. The first round is a draft of the “Purpose and Guiding Principles” for the Guidelines. Members of Washington’s early community, including libraries, are being asked for their input to help inform the next phase, which will be the creation of a draft for the redesigned Washington State Early Learning Guidelines.

All comments on the “Purpose and Guiding Principles” for the Guidelines must be submitted to Trang Tu, outreach project consultant, at [email protected], no later than June 29, 2011. 2) SDL PROQUEST PRICING AND MORE

The WSL Statewide Database Licensing project is pleased to announce that pricing has been finalized for all Washington libraries participating in the ProQuest database subscription package. To obtain the pricing for your library, please visit the ProQuest subscription renewal page at www.sos.wa.gov/quicklinks/Renewal, and access the spreadsheet appropriate to your type of library.

Libraries that have not yet signed and returned their “intent to participate” form are requested to do so by June 30. The form is available on the same page.

A ProQuest training needs assessment is currently underway. All library staff are encouraged to complete the survey, available through the end of June at www.surveymonkey.com/s/XHC5KHH.

3) FREE ADVOCACY TRAINING – TURNING THE PAGE 2.0

Turning the Page 2.0 is a free public library advocacy training course developed and presented by the Public Library Association (PLA) with generous support from The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. In this free, six-week, facilitated online course, library staff and supporters will learn how to create and tell their library’s story, deliver effective presentations, develop a compelling case for support, and build and sustain partnerships along the way.

Participants are encouraged to come with a specific, self-determined advocacy goal for their library. At the end of six weeks, they will have a complete Advocacy Work Plan to guide their efforts. The program consists of the following components:

  • Optional in-person kick-off;
  • Facilitator-led webinars;
  • Independent work on assigned modules;
  • Completion and submission of an Advocacy Work Plan;
  • Offline one-on-one feedback from facilitators.

Turning the Page 2.0 is open to any interested library staff member or supporter. ALA membership is not required to participate. This is the opportunity to build an advocacy team that includes staff, trustees, Friends, and others – there is no limit to the number of attendees per library. And it’s free! Details:

4) CARING FOR THE MIND – SECOND ROUND

The National Network of Libraries of Medicine, Pacific Northwest Region (NN/LM PNR) is pleased to offer a second session of a free online consumer health course: Caring for the Mind: Providing Reference Services for Mental Health Information. Participants successfully completing the course will receive three Medical Library Association continuing education contact hours that can be applied to their Consumer Health Information Specialization (www.mlanet.org/education/chc). The class will cover topics such as bibliotherapy, assessment and testing, and the future of mental health. Participants will increase their skills in providing mental health information to care providers and the public by learning:

  • Which are the best electronic resources to consult;
  • How to improve print collections;
  • Best approaches for handling interactions with emotional patrons.

The course begins on Monday, August 1, 2011, and concludes on Friday, August 26, 2011.

5) GRANT GUIDELINES FOR LEARNING LABS

The Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) has announced the availability of application guidelines for Learning Labs in Libraries and Museums, a grant program that supports the planning and design of up to 30 Learning Labs in libraries and museums throughout the country. The Labs are intended to engage middle- and high-school youth in mentor-led, interest-based, youth-centered, collaborative learning using digital and traditional media. Grantees will be required to participate, in-person and online, in a community of practice that will provide technical assistance, networking, and cross-project learning. Projects are expected to provide prototypes for the field and be based on current research about digital media and youth learning. There will be two project deadlines for this grant program: the first deadline is August 15, 2011, with a second deadline planned for spring 2012.
