2) CLOCK HOURS FOR PROQUEST K-12 TRAINING

Now through October, teacher librarians are encouraged to sign up for training on ProQuest resources, some new, some old, offered through the Statewide Database Licensing (SDL) contract. ProQuest K-12 trainer Jeffrey Cutler, and ESD 112 have teamed up to offer clock hours for a series of online webinar sessions.

The webinars cover a variety of topics and resources, including:

• SIRS Discoverer & CultureGrams;
• eLibrary, ProQuest Learning: Literature, & the History Study Center;
• eLibrary Student and Educator Research Tools;
• ProQuest Research Library and the new improved ProQuest search platform;
• ProQuest Resource Exploration and Q&A.

Each 90-minute webinar begins at 3:15 p.m. PDT. Anyone completing two sessions will be eligible for 3 continuing education clock hours. 3) FREE TRAINING FOR DISASTER PREPAREDNESS

Registration is now open for a free 2-part disaster preparedness and response workshop, Protecting Cultural Collections: Prevention, Preparedness, Response & Recovery, offered by the Western States and Territories Preservation Assistance Service (WESTPAS). This workshop is part of a coordinated regional approach to raising awareness about disaster planning for collecting institutions throughout the Western United States and helps participants to:

• Complete an institutional disaster plan for their collections by the end of Part 2;
• Learn how to train staff to implement the plan effectively;
• Set pre- and post-disaster action priorities for collections;
• Learn how to use practical decision-making skills during an emergency;
• Have hands-on practice in salvage procedures for books, documents, and non-print media.

Workshop information:

• Part 1: Friday, September 16, 2011, 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.
• Part 2: Friday, October 14, 2011, 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.
• Location: University Place Library, Room 1, University Place

4) EARLY LEARNING FELLOWS PROGRAM

The Foundation for Early Learning is excited to announce the 2011 Early Learning Fellows Program, a one-year program that supports early learning leaders in developing their leadership skills and in designing and implementing a project that benefits their community’s young children and their families. Fellows will receive leadership training and support, as well as a $2,000 stipend to carry out an early learning project.

The Fellowship is open to anyone working on behalf of early learners – children birth to age five in Washington. The ideal candidate:

• Represents an underserved community;
• Is interested in developing leadership skills;
• Can design and carry out a project benefiting children birth to age five.

Candidates may be parents and caregivers, early learning or elementary teachers and professionals, librarians, emerging leaders from communities of color, special needs communities, and others interested in supporting early learning. Applications are due no later than 5:00 p.m. PDT, Tuesday, September 6, 2011.

5) FINAL SET OF CONNECT THE DOTS PRESENTATIONS NOW ONLINE

The Foundation for Early Learning has just posted the final set of videos from Connect the Dots: An Early Learning Exchange held on June 30, 2011. All of the videos are available on the Foundation’s YouTube page, www.youtube.com/fdnforearlylearning.

• Dr. Daniel Cook, Clinic Professor at The Center for Pediatric Dentistry, speaks about the importance of oral health;
• Dr. Dimitri Christakis, Director of the Center for Child Health, Development and Health Care at Seattle Children’s Hospital Research Institute; and Professor of Pediatrics at the UW School of Medicine, talks about new research around television and young children.
• Val Thomas-Matson, who is currently in development on a commercial-free program for preschoolers based on brain research, called Look, Listen & Learn, shares a demo of the program, which uses television to make learning and discovery exciting for children and families and includes children from communities normally underrepresented in the media.
