1) LETTERS ABOUT LITERATURE 2012

The annual Letters About Literature contest has begun. Please encourage the teachers and students at your school or in your library area to participate. Homeschoolers are welcome as well. Entries must be postmarked by January 6, 2012.

2) FREE WEBINAR – BOOK REPAIR BASICS

Do your circulating collections need help? Peter D. Verheyen, Head of Preservation and Conservation, and Marianne Hanley, Assistant Conservator, from the Department of Preservation and Conservation at Syracuse University, will demonstrate Book Repair Basics for Libraries, in a free webinar sponsored by ALCTS. Techniques for the following basic repairs for bound circulating collections materials in school, public, and academic libraries will be covered:

  • Tip-ins;
  • Page repairs;
  • Hinge tightening;
  • Spine repairs (various types).

The webinar will include demonstrations complete with text, images, video, and links to additional resources. Please note that repairs and conservation treatments for rare and special collections materials will NOT be discussed.

3) LAST CHANCE FOR FREE WESTPAS WORKSHOP

There is still time to register for a free 2-part disaster preparedness and response workshop, Protecting Cultural Collections: Prevention, Preparedness, Response & Recovery, offered by the Western States and Territories Preservation Assistance Service (WESTPAS). This workshop is part of a coordinated regional approach to raising awareness about disaster planning for collecting institutions throughout the Western United States and will help participants to:

  • Complete an institutional disaster plan for their collections by the end of Part 2;
  • Learn how to train staff to implement the plan effectively;
  • Set pre- and post-disaster action priorities for collections;
  • Learn how to use practical decision-making skills during an emergency;
  • Get hands-on practice in salvage procedures for books, documents, and non-print media.

Workshop information:

  • Part 1: Friday, September 16, 2011, 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.;
  • Part 2: Friday, October 14, 2011, 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.;
  • Location: University Place Library, Room 1, University Place;
  • Workshop instructor: Gary Menges, Preservation Administrator, University of Washington Libraries.

4) MINING FOR HEALTH INFORMATION AND FINDING GEMS

Announcing the 2011 annual meeting of the Pacific Northwest Chapter of the Medical Library Association, October 15-18, 2011 in beautiful Boise, Idaho. You are invited to attend classes on Saturday and Sunday, including:
