1) DOWNLOADABLE AUDIOBOOKS SUBSCRIPTION RENEWAL

Announcing the annual renewal for subscriptions to downloadable audiobook collections from Recorded Books (formerly NetLibrary): the new OneClickdigital subscription term begins April 1, 2012 for most participating Washington libraries.

There is no cost increase for public and academic libraries and the subscription renewal will be automatic unless a cancellation form is submitted by March 28, 2012. There will be a 10% increase for K-12 school libraries and school districts. K-12 subscribers need to submit a purchase order to Recorded Books by the same date. If canceling, K-12 institutions should submit a cancellation form.

2) FREE WORKSHOP – PROTECTING CULTURAL COLLECTIONS

Fire, floods, earthquakes, broken pipes – disasters can happen at any time, endangering both lives and property, and damaging or destroying a community’s cultural heritage. Having a plan in place and knowing what to do in advance can prevent, or help to mitigate, damage and loss.

It’s not too late to register for a free 2-part disaster preparedness and response workshop offered by the Western States and Territories Preservation Assistance Service (WESTPAS). This workshop is part of a coordinated regional approach to raising awareness about disaster planning for collecting institutions throughout the Western United States. This 2-part training is free to participants, who will:

  • Complete a disaster response and collection salvage plan for their collections by the end of Part 2;
  • Learn how to train staff to implement the plan effectively;
  • Set pre- and post-disaster action priorities for collections;
  • Learn how to use practical decision-making skills during an emergency;
  • Have hands-on practice in salvage procedures for a variety of materials including books, documents, photographs, and objects.

Workshop information:

  • Part 1: Tuesday, March 27, 2012, 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.;
  • Part 2: Tuesday, May 8, 2012, 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.;
  • Location: Odegaard Undergraduate Library, Room 220, University of Washington, Seattle, WA;
  • Workshop instructor: Gary Menges, retired Preservation Administrator at the University of Washington Libraries, Seattle, and member of AIC-CERT (American Institute for Conservation – Collections Emergency Response Team).

3) CALL FOR PROPOSALS FOR NORTHWEST ILL

Mark your calendars! The 11th Northwest Interlibrary Loan and Resource Sharing Conference will be held on September 13 and 14, 2012, in Portland, Oregon, at Portland Community College, Sylvania Campus. This year’s theme will be “Delivering on the Discovery Expectation.” Stephen Abram will be providing food for thought as keynote speaker.

The conference planning committee is now soliciting proposals for 45-minute presentations, 10-minute quick talks, and poster sessions. Topics of interest include:

  • Innovative uses of technology and tools for ILL;
  • Ideas for optimizing ILL workflows;
  • Professional development strategies, such as training and mentoring;
  • Library trends and their impact on ILL.

4) CHECK OUT NORTHWEST CENTRAL ON FACEBOOK

Continuing Education is vital to today’s library staff. Technology changes rapidly, and our patrons’ needs have grown as well. Northwest Central (NWC) is a key continuing education network for library staff in the Pacific Northwest. NWC tries to find sources that not only fit your CE needs, but also your budget. They will post anything they think will be helpful, but they always keep their eyes open for free or low cost training. Although NWC doesn’t produce continuing education opportunities, they scour the web for likely possibilities for you, members of their library community. You can use their website to find trainings and resources on a broad range of topics such as:

  • Conducting a capital campaign;
  • Rethinking the best ways to help your users;
  • Discovering new fantasy books for teens;
  • Integrating eBooks in your library.

There’s something for every kind of library and every kind of library worker.

5) ONLINE COURSE – FUNDAMENTALS OF PRESERVATION

Do you need to know more about preservation? Is traveling to a training site problematic? Learn the basics of preservation by attending the four-week online course, Fundamentals of Preservation, presented by ALCTS (the Association for Library Collections & Technical Services), a division of ALA. Designed to inform all staff, across divisions and departments and at all levels of responsibility, this course will introduce participants to the principles, policies, and practices of preservation in libraries and archives.

This course is one-third of the Collection Management Elective course approved by the Library Support Staff Certification Program (LSSCP). Course components will cover:

  • Preservation as a formal library function, and how it reflects and supports the institutional mission;
  • The primary role of preventive care, including good storage conditions, emergency planning, and careful handling of collections;
  • The history and manufacture of physical formats and how this affects preservation options;
  • Standard methods of care and repair, as well as reformatting options;
  • Challenges in preserving digital content and what the implications are for the future of scholarship.

Course sessions will take place during the following four weeks:

  • Session 1: March 26 – April 20, 2012;
  • Session 2: May 21 – June 15, 2012;
  • Session 3: September 10 – October 5, 2012;
  • October 22 – November 16, 2012.
