1) APPLY FOR A POSITION ON THE LIBRARY COUNCIL OF WASHINGTON

The Library Council of Washington (LCW) advises the State Librarian and the Office of the Secretary of State on statewide library issues and the expenditure of federal LSTA funding. Applications are currently being accepted for the following four positions on the Council:

  • Information Technology;
  • Public Libraries serving over 100,000 persons;
  • Rural Libraries;
  • School Libraries.

Applications must be postmarked by Friday, September 21, 2012 to be considered. The term for all of these positions is anticipated to begin in January 2013. 2) DON’T FORGET TO REGISTER FOR NWILL 2012

There’s still time to take advantage of the early bird registration rate for the 11th Northwest Interlibrary Loan and Resource Sharing Conference (NWILL 2012). This year’s conference, Delivering on the Discovery Expectation, promises to be an exciting one and will feature Stephen Abram as keynote speaker. Sessions include:

  • “The Real Cost of ILL” presented by Lars Leon;
  • “Delivering on User Expectations in a One-Click World” presented by Joanne Percy;
  • “Patron-driven E-Book Initiative by the Orbis Cascade Alliance” presented by Greg Doyle.

NWILL 2012 will take place September 13 – 14, 2012, at Portland Community College, Sylvania Campus, Portland, Oregon. Be sure to register before September 1 to take advantage of early bird registration fees ($55 for 1 day; $85 for the full conference). 3) ARE YOU READY?

Okay, now you have a disaster response plan, but do you know how well it will work in a real disaster? It’s better to find out now rather than after a disaster has occurred! Put your plan to the test at Are You Ready? Scenario Planning & Collaboration Among Heritage Institutions to Improve Disaster Preparedness for Collections, where participants will test their institutions’ disaster plans to identify areas for improvement, improve their own ability to evaluate risks, and work together with other participants to build a shared vision for regional disaster preparedness. The workshop instructor is Kristen Kern, Fine & Performing Arts Librarian, Portland State University.

Workshop Information:

  • When: Friday, October 5, 2012, 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.;
  • Where: Oregon State Library, Salem, Oregon;
  • Cost: Free;

4) TIPS FOR COPING ON THE FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL

It’s getting to be that time of year – young children heading off to school for the very first time. Need tips on helping children and their caregivers cope with this next stage of life? The Foundation for Early Learning (www.earlylearning.org) provides a number of resources for parents as well as professionals. A recent blog post by Cesily M. Crowser, Parent Education Instructor at North Seattle Community College, offers separation survival tips for that important milestone in a child’s (and caregiver’s) life. 5) JOIN THE ACCESSIBILITY HACKATHON

Do you like a challenge? Would you like to use your knowledge and skills to make technology accessible for everyone? Come to the US Federal Communication Commission’s second accessibility hackathon, where developers from the Washington, DC area meet up with online participants to build accessibility apps and websites in real time. Focused on training, collaboration, and professional networking, the event welcomes the participation of anyone interested in accessible technology, at any level of technical expertise.
