1) A MESSAGE FROM ACTING STATE LIBRARIAN, RAND SIMMONS

We are less than a month away from Election Day. You are surely aware of the presidential race (Obama vs. Romney), the Washington gubernatorial race (McKenna vs. Inslee) and races for the legislature and local offices. Are you aware that there is a race for Secretary of State, too? That’s right. Sam Reed will retire on January 16, 2013, and a new Secretary of State will take office. On the ballot are Kim Wyman, currently Thurston County auditor (www.kimwyman.com); and Kathleen Drew, former state senator from Issaquah, and policy person for Governor Gregoire, (kathleendrew2012.com). One of these two candidates will be the winner of the November 6, 2012 election.

You may be wondering, what does this have to do with the Washington State Library (WSL)? WSL is a division of the Office of the Secretary of State. The election for the next Secretary of State has focused mainly on the candidate’s ability to oversee elections, but there has been some debate about the State Library, State Archives, and Heritage Center.

As Acting State Librarian, I encourage you to become an informed and engaged citizen and exercise your right to participate in our great democracy by voting on November 6.

2) LETTERS ABOUT LITERATURE 2013

The Letters About Literature annual contest has begun. Please encourage the teachers and students in grades 4 – 10 at your school or in your library area to participate. Homeschoolers are welcome as well. Entries must be postmarked by Friday, January 11, 2013.

3) ZINIO GROUP PURCHASE

The WSL Statewide Database Licensing (SDL) project is pleased to announce a group purchase opportunity for Zinio, the new online magazine reading platform available through Recorded Books. Volume discounts will be available for the annual platform fee, which allows libraries to purchase unlimited use subscriptions to individual magazines or collections of titles.

The deadline for participation is November 16, 2012. Service will begin December 1, 2012. More information is available on the SDL Group Purchases page at www.sos.wa.gov/quicklinks/purchases.

4) 2013 TEEN VIDEO CHALLENGE

The Collaborative Summer Library Program (CSLP) invites teens across the country to create short videos, 30 to 90 seconds in length, to enter in the 2013 Teen Video Challenge, a national video competition promoting Summer Reading with the theme, “Beneath the Surface.” The winning video from each participating state will be named one of the CSLP 2013 Teen Videos to promote summer reading nationwide. Creators of the winning state video will be awarded $275, and their associated public library will receive prizes worth $125 from CSLP and Upstart. Winners will be announced by CSLP in spring 2013.

5) LOOKING FOR DATA ON CHILDREN AND YOUTH?

Do you need to know how many young children live in poverty in your county? How reading levels in your county compare to others? The number of teens who abused alcohol or drugs in the past year? Find statistics answering these questions and more at the Annie E. Casey Foundation’s KIDS COUNT Data Center. Information is available by state, by county, congressional district, and by category such as:

  • Education;
  • Economic well-being;
  • Health;
  • Safety and risky behaviors.

New Data Center tools are now available including the Interactive Data Wheel, which gives a graphical state-by-state comparison of the data, and “KIDS COUNT Mobile,” which provides access to KIDS COUNT data quickly and easily anytime and anywhere.

To find out more about KIDS COUNT and to explore this rich source of information, visit datacenter.kidscount.org.
