1) FIRST TUESDAYS – IMPACT SURVEY

Do your library’s technology services meet the needs of your users? Would you like to know, but don’t know where to begin? Come to the next First Tuesdays presentation, Impact Survey. Samantha Becker, of the University of Washington iSchool, will talk about this online survey tool that is designed specifically for public libraries that want to have a better understanding of their communities and their use of public technology resources and services. Find out how your library can become a more integral part of your community’s digital world.

Designed as a continuing education opportunity for staff of libraries in Washington State, this free web presentation, which will take place on September 10, 2013, from 9:00 to 10:00 a.m. PDT, lets attendees share their skills and successes and learn about new topics. 2) LAST CALL FOR LCW APPLICATIONS

The Library Council of Washington (LCW) advises the State Librarian and the Office of the Secretary of State on statewide library issues and the expenditure of federal LSTA funding. The LCW meets four times a year. Meetings are held throughout the state in different types of libraries, or online. Travel reimbursement is provided in accordance with state travel regulations.

Applications are currently being accepted to fill the following positions on the Council:

  • Academic Libraries (Two-Year): Representing the needs and issues of two-year community and technical college libraries;
  • Cultural Diversity: Representing the needs and issues of libraries serving people of diverse cultural and socio-economic backgrounds and individuals of varying abilities, literacy levels, and age levels;
  • School Libraries: representing the needs and issues of K-12 school libraries.

Applications must be postmarked by Friday, September 13, 2013, to be considered. The term for all of these positions is anticipated to begin in January 2014. 4) 2014 WLA CONFERENCE SEEKS PROPOSALS

Program proposals are now being accepted for the 2014 Washington Library Association (WLA) Conference, to be held April 30 – May 2 at the Wenatchee Convention Center & Coast Hotel. WLA’s Annual Conference is THE place to highlight innovative programs, emerging issues, and exciting advances in libraries.

Share your skills and experience by leading a preconference workshop or conference session. All Preconferences (from 3 – 7 hours each workshop) will be held April 30. All Conference Sessions (75 minutes each session) will be held May 1 – 2. For additional information, go to wla.org/wla2014conference. Proposals are due no later than Friday, September 27, 2013.

5) DISASTER PLANNING – BEYOND COLLECTIONS

You’ve heard about disaster planning for collections, but have you also thought about preparing the business side of your organization? How will you protect your records, policies, and procedures? How will you communicate? How will you help your most important asset—your employees—to prepare for and recover from disasters? Having a plan that prepares your business operations for a disaster can ensure that you’re back in business quickly and able to serve your community.

Get help with business preparedness planning through a series of free webinars this month, hosted by the U.S. Small Business Administration and Agility Recovery. This series is presented in collaboration with FEMA’s Ready Campaign, as part of National Preparedness Month.
