1) FIRST TUESDAYS PRESENTS the Career Bridge database
In this month’s First Tuesdays program, “Career Bridge Database: 5000 Pathways to a New Career,” Marina Parr will give a guided tour of the new online tool created by the state’s Workforce Board that lets people explore over 5,000 education and training programs throughout Washington. It’s the only web site that provides a “consumer report” that uses statewide data to show whether a program’s graduates got a job, how much they earned and what field they ended up working in, so potential students know ahead of time whether it’s a wise investment.
This WorkSource Training site is one of which library staff should be aware. The site contains valuable career information-from online self-assessment tests that allow users to better understand their strengths and talents and how they align with a career, to financial aid opportunities that help students find a way to pay for their education through grants, loans and scholarships tailored to Washington residents.

2) CONNECTING THE DOTS WEBSITE
The Connecting the Dots project will support the development of research-based evaluation methodologies and tools that can demonstrate the effectiveness of Washington’s public libraries as hubs for community-based early learning initiatives.

3) FIND AN EARLY LEARNING FAIR IN YOUR AREA

4) BOOKS FOR BABIES
The Foundation for Early Learning is running a Facebook and Twitter campaign that will put books into the hands of babies. For every Facebook “Like” or re-tweet, a book is given to Reach Out and Read WA. Find out more via this shortcut: www.sos.wa.gov/quicklinks/babies.

5) CIRCLE OF LEARNING SCHOLARSHIPS
The San Jose School of Library and Information Science (SLIC) and the American Indian Library Association (AILA) have partnered to recruit and support American Indians and Alaska Natives who are interested in earning a Master of Library and Information Science (MLIS) degree. The Circle of Learning program, funded by a grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS), offers students the opportunity to be involved in professional conferences and workshops, to interact with Native leaders in the profession, and to develop professional contacts that can benefit them now and in the future. This fully online ALA-accredited program enables students to live anywhere while completing their degree.
Students interested in the Circle of Learning program must be admitted to the School’s MLIS program to receive scholarship funding. Applications for San Jose’s MLIS program may be found via www.sos.wa.gov/quicklinks/MLISApps.

6) ALA ANNUAL CONFERENCE FUNDING OPPORTUNITY
Are you looking for funds to help pay for your trip to ALA Annual 2011 in New Orleans? Apply by Tuesday, December 14, 2010 for the NMRT Shirley Olofson Memorial Award and you may receive a $1000 check to help defray the cost of attendance. Applicants must:
- Be a member of ALA and NMRT;
- Be active in the library profession;
- Show promise for activity in the area of professional development;
- Have valid financial need;
- Have attended no more than five ALA annual conferences.
