1) APPLY FOR A POSITION ON THE LIBRARY COUNCIL OF WASHINGTON
Applications are currently being accepted for three Library Council of Washington positions. These positions represent: (1) academic libraries in two-year colleges, (2) cultural diversity, and (3) public libraries serving fewer than 100,000. Applications must be postmarked by Friday, September 17, 2010 to be considered. Service for these positions is anticipated to begin in January 2011 although the first meeting of the Council will not be until March 2011.

2) REF22 PRESENTS CHAT REFERENCE WITH TEENAGERS
Ref22 is pleased to present Jennifer Robinson, a rockstar chat librarian at the Seattle Public Library, who has the good fortune to work with teens on a regular basis, in person and via online chat. For this month’s Ref22 session she will present some of the best ways to serve teens and keep them on task, in person and virtually, and she’ll talk specifically about how to avoid some of the pitfalls you may encounter in chatting with teens. Any library staff that regularly serves teens, as well as both virtual and physical reference librarians will find this session of interest.

3) HANDS-ON EAUDIOBOOK ORIENTATION SESSIONS
The Washington State Library and EBSCO/NetLibrary are pleased to offer a series of 2-hour hands-on, in-person eAudiobook Orientation sessions at various locations and dates. These sessions are intended for libraries and schools purchasing NetLibrary via the statewide Downloadable Audiobooks project. Half are scheduled mid-afternoon in hopes of making it easier for teacher-librarians to attend.

4) IT’S NOT TOO LATE TO REGISTER FOR EARLY LEARNING SYMPOSIUM
The 2010 Early Learning Public Library Partnership will be holding their second annual symposium on Friday, September 17, from 8:15 to 3:30 at the Seattle Public Library. This is a great opportunity to hear about current developments in early learning in the state of Washington, to connect with community partners, and to find out more about early learning coalitions. 5) MY SKILLS MY FUTURE
The U.S. Employment and Training Administration has announced a new electronic tool, mySkills myFuture, which officially launched on September 6, 2010. mySkills myFuture helps laid-off workers and other career changers to find and explore new occupations. Users can identify occupations that require skills and knowledge matching their current or previous job, learn more about these suggested matches, locate local training programs, and/or apply for jobs.
From the mySkills myFuture homepage, users enter the name of a current or previous job, and get a list of occupations related to that experience by O*NET skill, knowledge and ability attributes. From there, users can:
- Quickly compare the list of potential occupations;
- Get local job listings and salary information;
- Find occupational details, including job descriptions, tasks, tools and technology, and more;
- View a skills comparison in side-by-side charts;
- View and apply for job postings in their local area;
- Locate local training programs, including short-and long-term training programs at community colleges, four-year colleges and other educational institutions either by state or by ZIP code; and
- Find related licenses, certifications and apprenticeship programs.

6) ALCTS RDA E-FORUM
Released in June 2010, Resource Description and Access (RDA) is the intended successor to the Anglo-American Cataloging Rules (AACR2). While RDA is not being immediately adopted in the United States, it is being tested by the Library of Congress, the National Library of Medicine, and the National Agriculture Library as part of the U.S. National Libraries RDA Test Plan.
During this time, what are libraries doing to prepare for the adoption of RDA? What impact will implementation have on staff training and systems? How will libraries manage the integration of RDA records with AACR2 records in their catalogs? How will libraries assess the value of the new cataloging code in terms of its ability to meet user needs and contribute to future systems development?
This ALCTS E-Forum will provide an opportunity for the community at large to discuss a wide range of issues related to RDA and its overall implications for library operations. An ALCTS e-forum provides an opportunity for librarians to discuss matters of interest, led by a moderator, through the e-forum discussion list. The e-forum discussion list works like an email listserv: register your email address with the list, and then you will receive messages and be able to communicate with other participants through an email discussion. Registration is necessary to participate, but it’s free.

7) YOURS, MINE, OURS – LEADERSHIP THROUGH COLLABORATION
OCLC Research and an RLG Partnership planning committee have created a two-day event on strategies for effective collaboration that will be hosted by the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C, September 20-21. All RLG Partners, as well as representatives from other cultural heritage organizations, are cordially invited to attend this free event.
Because travel budgets are limited and there are a limited number of spots available at the event venue, the event will be streamed live for remote viewing. Those unable to attend in person are encouraged to host a local viewing party and invite a group of like-minded individuals watch a live stream of the event together. It’s easy to host a local viewing party! There is no charge to do so and no special software is required. All you need is a computer with speakers and a Web browser, although you may want to have a projector as well if you’ll be broadcasting the event to more than a handful of people.
