1) SERVICE EXCELLENCE IN YOUR LIBRARY
WSL’s latest learning opportunity, “Service Excellence in Your Library,” has two sessions still open: March 23 in Camas, and March 30 in Spokane. You don’t want to miss this opportunity to propel the already good service at your library into GREAT service. This free workshop is appropriate for anyone working in libraries, regardless of job position or library type.
Join experienced library trainers, Kate Laughlin and Robin Dye, as they delve into what it takes to transform a library’s culture to one of “service excellence.” Explore how such a transformation occurs, some of the benefits that arise, and how each of us can encourage this change. Included are tips for handling service challenges, such as giving bad news, setting limits and depersonalizing hostile behavior. Consistent approaches to service are emphasized, and ample time is included for group discussion and skills practice. Workbooks are provided for each participant.

2) JOIN NASA IN CELEBRATING EARTH DAY
Host an Earth Day event to observe clouds using the GLOBE Observer app on April 22, 2017. Participating libraries will receive a free packet of Earth Day programming materials (on a first-come, first-served basis).
Sign up now and visit the Earth Day Resource Center for hands-on activities, handouts, and resources for creating your own library display. Download the app from the GLOBE Observer website. Be sure to create a login using referral code “earth2017” so that NASA can make a map of all the contributions from the STAR_Net community.

3) SUMMER MEALS PROGRAM
The Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction’s Child Nutrition Services (OSPI CNS) office is pleased to announce the 2017 Summer Food Service Program (SFSP). The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) SFSP was established to ensure that children in lower-income areas would continue to receive nutritious meals during long school vacations, when they do not have access to school meals. OSPI CNS will be accepting applications beginning April 1, 2017, from organizations interested in sponsoring summer meal sites.
Sponsorship is open to public and private non-profit local educational agencies, residential summer camps, private nonprofit organizations, tribal organizations, and units of local, county, municipal, state, or federal government. Colleges and universities that participate in the Upward Bound Program also may sponsor meal sites.

4) TRENDS ANALYSIS
ALA’s Center for the Future of Libraries works to identify trends relevant to libraries and librarianship. Their trends collection is available to help libraries and librarians understand how trends are developing and why they matter. Each trend is updated as new reports and articles are made available. New trends will be added as they are developed. Trends are organized into seven categories: Society, Technology, Education, the Environment, Politics (and Government), Economics, and Demographics (STEEPED). 25 trends are currently listed; examples range alphabetically from: Aging Advances and Anonymity through Unplugged and Urbanization. 5) CONFRONTING MISINFORMATION
Newspapers, social media, 24/7 cable news, Google…information is everywhere, and it can feel overwhelming. In this webinar, “Confronting Misinformation: How Librarians Can Assist Patrons in the Digital Information Age,” Barbara Alvarez, Communications & Information Specialist, will share ideas about how librarians can help patrons navigate the sometimes rocky information waters. This webinar will also examine how information access and creation has changed, where it is going, and how librarians can take steps to ensure that their patrons access credible resources. Presented by the FDLP Academy (Federal Depository Library Program).
