1) LSTA ANNUAL REPORT
Each year the Washington State Library submits an annual report on the use of Library Services & Technology Act funding to the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS). The current Annual Report is for the use of the 2015 LSTA award.

2) WRITING EFFECTIVE EMAIL
The Washington State Library is offering a free, 3-hour, hands-on course designed to teach the following skills:
- Using email formats to create clarity;
- Understanding and utilizing the general and courteous “rules of engagement” when composing or replying to email;
- Performing an audience analysis prior to writing;
- Composing email that clearly communicates desired actions (e.g., approval, commitment, providing information, etc.);
- Recognizing and stopping inappropriate, emotional, or harmful email threads;
- Essential proofreading for tone, punctuation, and grammar.
Identical morning and afternoon sessions will be offered at four locations throughout the month of February:
- Thursday, February 2, 2017: King County Service Center, 960 Newport Way NW, Issaquah;
- Tuesday, February 14, 2017: Pierce County Service Center, 3005 112th St E, Tacoma;
- Thursday, February 16, 2017: Fort Vancouver Regional Library. 1007 Mill Plain Blvd, Vancouver;
- Thursday, February 23, 2017: Spokane City Library, 906 W Main Ave.

3) FREE COMPUTERS – MIA LAB GRANTS
Equipment and funding is available for Microsoft Imagine Academy (MIA) program members to support the development of new or to expand existing Microsoft certification or coding programs. Laptops, 10-inch tablet computers, and routers purchased by the State Library are available, along with up to $3000 per award to purchase equipment accessories like cases, tablet sleeves, keyboards, etc., or other materials and activities to support project activities. There is no limit to the quantity of laptops or tablets that can be requested; hardware technical specs are available in the Grant Guidelines.
- Lab Grant applications must be received by COB Tuesday, January 24, 2017, with contract execution expected before March 20, 2017.
- Grant materials (Guidelines and Application) are available on the State Library’s Grant page.
- The Lab Grant opportunity replaces the Microsoft Imagine Academy 2016-2017 grant, which will close Tuesday, January 17, 2017.

4) TEEN VIDEO CHALLENGE
Time is running out on this opportunity, so remind your teens about the contest. Fame and fortune could be theirs! The Washington State Library and the Collaborative Summer Library Program (CSLP) have launched the 2017 Teen Video Challenge, a national video competition for teens to get involved with reading and their public library’s summer reading program.
Teens are invited to create a 30 to 90 second video with their unique interpretation of the 2016 teen slogan “Build a Better World.” The idea is to involve teens in summer reading, before and during the summer months, by being part of the process. This is an opportunity for teens to showcase their creativity and have their ideas heard by a national audience. The winning video will become one of the CSLP 2017 Teen Videos used to promote summer reading nationwide.
- For full details about the CSLP 2017 Teen Video Challenge and to find out how to enter Washington’s competition, please visit sos.wa.gov/q/teenvideo.
- $100 will be awarded to the creator of Washington’s winning video and their associated public library will receive prizes worth at least $50 from Upstart. Winners will be announced by CSLP in April 2017.
- The deadline for a submission of a video for this contest is February 15, 2017.

5) IMLS GRANT OPPORTUNITIES
National Leadership Grants for Libraries (NLG) support projects that address significant challenges and opportunities facing the library and archive fields and that have the potential to advance theory and practice. Successful proposals will generate results such as new tools, research findings, models, services, practices, or alliances that will be widely used, adapted, scaled, or replicated to extend the benefits of federal investment. The Laura Bush 21st Century Librarian Program (LB21) supports professional development, graduate education, and continuing education to help libraries and archives develop a diverse workforce of librarians to better meet the changing learning and information needs of the American public.
